BOOK - Steamboat Connections: Montreal To Upper Canada 1816-1843
By Frank Mackey
When we think of steamboats, the Mississippi River in the United States is more likely to come to mind than the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. Montreal Gazette editor and independent historian Frank Mackey has filled in a blank in the story of Canada's expansion in Steamboat Connections: Montreal to Upper Canada. In the days when locks and canals were in their infancy on these two great rivers, small steamers braved rapids to make runs between Ottawa, Montreal, Kingston, and other Great Lakes ports. Mackey has read and incorporated a staggering range of historical sources which he integrates smoothly with his own lively text, concentrating as much on personalities as on bare facts.

BOOK - Keepers of the Record, The History of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives
By Deidre Simmons
Keepers of the Record, The History of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives is a narrative history of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives that provides the context for over 300 years of business record keeping. Deidre Simmons places the archives within the historical context of the Company, England, and Canada, as well as British and Canadian archival traditions. Keepers of the Record is abundantly illustrated with archival photographs that evoke the texture and slightly musty smell of soft leather and crisp vellum and the ghostly presence of the people who created the pristine script, writing by candlelight in unheated (or overheated, depending on the season) dwellings in the wilderness of Hudson Bay or in the centre of London.

BOOK - Almonte
By Frank Cosentino
In Lanark County, Ontario where the early settlers' Irish, English and Scottish origins are prominent in the names of the communities they founded -- Lanark, Corkery, Glen Isle, Scotch Corners, Tatlock and the like -- it seems more than a little odd that the thriving town of Almonte should be named for a now-forgotten Mexican general. By Edward J. Lowell. (This historical reprint by Global Heritage Press)
The history of the German auxiliaries, who fought for Great Britain in the Revolutionary War, has not received from American writers the amount of attention which its importance would seem to deserve. BOOK or CD - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada [Ontario]
By J. A. MacDonell.

MacDonell recognized that much had been written on the subject of United Empire Loyalist settlement in Ontario, the War of 1812-14, and the Rebellion of 1837-8, but expressed concern that there was little mention made of the part that the Highlanders of Glengarry played in those conflicts. He corrects that oversight within the 29 chapters that comprise this formitable text. This book is an fine source of information for those interested in early settlement of the Highlanders in Glengarry and surrounding counties, and the role that Glengarry Highland Scots played in the 18th and 19th century military conflicts.

As decades pass -- many stones are becoming harder, if not impossible, to read the inscriptions they originally contained. By archiving the images, we can help save these important records and also assist researchers using this valuable resource.
