BOOK - Strange Fatality, The Battle of Stoney Creek, 1813 (War of 1812)
By James E. Elliott .
The first detailed account of the little-known battle that changed the course of the War of 1812. Journalist and author James Elliott has compellingly reconstructed one of the least understood actions of the War of 1812. From the rise to brigadier of blacksmith John Chandler, to the Highland heroics of Alexander Fraser, Strange Fatality explores the dynamics of a night battle that stemmed the tide of invasion, cost two generals their freedom and unseated the highest-ranking soldier in the American army. In this ground-breaking study of a battle in which both sides were essentially blind, James Elliott sheds light, not only on a violent donnybrook in the dark, but also on the bizarre train of events that occasioned it. With 10 original maps, over 100 illustrations, portraits and photographs, many never seen before, as well as appendices on battlefield archaeology and the little-known “monument war.”

BOOK - Forest to Farm: Early Days of Otonabee (Second Edition)
(Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada)
By D. Gayle Nelson.
Twenty-five years after first publishing Forest to Farm, D. Gayle Nelson published a greatly enlarged edition that provides insights into pioneer life in the township. Apart from the more than 100 new historical photographs, Gayle included a number of excerpts from primary sources: diaries, newspapers and letters. These sources describe a different immigrant experience than those reflected in the writings of Moodie, Strickland or Traill. Gayle included a large section on Otonabee families that genealogists will find particularly helpful. An extensive family index is provided to simplify research.

BOOK - William Wye Smith: Recollections of a Nineteenth Century Scottish Canadian
Edited by Scott A. McLean and Michael E. Vance
Many writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emphasised the virtues of early rural pioneers and life on the land as a general criticism of what they perceived to be the negative, alienating influence of Ontario's rapid urban and industrial expansion. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth century Upper Canadian (Ontario) poet, was no exception. This fully annotated version of Smith's unpublished manuscript highlights Smith's unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, as well as his position in literary history.

BOOK - Ulster Emigration to Colonial America 1718-1775 (Northern Ireland to eastern USA & Canada)
By R. J. Dickson; new introduction by Graeme Kirkham
First published in 1966, this book remains the acknowledged work of scholarship on migration in the eighteenth century of a quarter of a million people from Ulster to the New World. It combines detailed investigation of the economic, social and political background to the exodus with information on the emigrant trade and an analysis of the motivations and origins of the emigrants themselves. This new edition includes a specially written Introduction by Graeme Kirkham, whose researches on both sides of the Atlantic are reflected in an essay which considers recent advances in the understanding of this important mass population movement from Ireland to America.

BOOK - Merchants in Plenty: Joseph Smyth's Belfast Directories of 1807 and 1808 - With an Historical Introduction and Bibliography of Belfast Directories to 1900
By Joseph Smyth (directories) and J. R. R. Adams (historical introduction).
The directories here reprinted, from unique copies in the Linen Hall Library, vividly recreate this Belfast of cotton mills and learned societies, sailmakers and booksellers. It will be of interest both to genealogists and to those who care for the history of Belfast. The Belfast of the first decade of the nineteenth century was a bustling and growing town of some 22,000 inhabitants. It was dominated by the cotton industry and the linen trade. The foundations of such potentially important enterprises as engineering and shipbuilding were being laid. Yet this was still a period when a trip to Dublin took twenty-one hours by coach (with a double guard for extra security) and when the inhabitants were ferried round the town by sedan chair.

What To Do When You Accidentally Add The Same Person To Legacy Twice
By: Rick Roberts. One of the questions that I am most frequently asked regarding genealogy software is, "how do I fix it when I accidentally add the same person to my database twice". The solution is very simple. However many users fear that they will badly damage their family files while trying to fix what is really a simple and common problem.

Muhammad Ali Making Pilgrimage to His Ancestral Town in Ireland
By: Rick Roberts. Famed boxing champion Muhammad Ali is getting ready to make a pilgrimage to the Irish town where his great-grandfather was born. The sports legend has accepted an invitation to visit Ireland in September, after local researchers recently discovered documents that indicate one of Ali's ancestors was born 160 years ago in the County Clare town of Ennis.

Citizen's Rally to Block Governor's Closing of Michigan's State Library
By: Shirley Gage Hodges. It was a wonderful example of how people will join together to help a cause that is important. It was refreshing to see genealogists, historians, military groups and concerned citizens gathering to protest a proposal by Gov. Jennifer Granholm to break up the genealogical collections at the Michigan Historical Center.
