BOOK - Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, Father of the Canadian Crown By Nathan Tidridge; J.J. Grant Published by Dundurn, Toronto, 2013 The story of Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent (1767-1820) is also a story of early Canada. An active participant in the very genesis of the country, including discussions that would eventually lead to Confederation, the Prince lived in Quebec City, undertook historic tours of Upper Canada and the United States (both firsts for a member of the Royal Family) before he was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as commander-in-chief of British North America. Canada's maps are dotted with his name (Prince Edward Island the most obvious example), making him one of the most honoured among our forgotten historical figures. Exiled from the court of his father, and accompanied by his long-time mistress Julie de St. Laurent, the 24-year-old Prince Edward Augustus arrived in Quebec City in 1791. His life became woven into the fabric of a highly-charged society and left an indelible mark on the role of the monarchy in Canada. Seventy years later the country would be united under the crown of his daughter, Victoria, Sir John A. Macdonald’s "Queen of Canada." ISBN 978-1-45970-789-4 More information

ABBEY pH TESTING PENThe Abbey pH Testing Pen is a time-proven product -- developed over 15 years ago as a simple tool to spot-test books and other dry paper materials for acidity. To use the Abbey pH Pen, draw a small line or spot in an unobtrusive area of the material being tested. If the mark is pale yellow, the paper is acidic. If the mark is pale purple, the paper is neutral or alkaline. On papers of intermediate acidity, the mark will turn a tan color that combines yellow and purple. The light shade of the line helps make the spot-test as inconspicuous as possible. More information

BOOK - Prisons, Asylums, and the Public: Institutional Visiting in the Nineteenth CenturyBy Janet Miron Published by University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, Toronto, 2011 The prisons and asylums of Canada and the United States were a popular destination for institutional tourists in the nineteenth-century. Thousands of visitors entered their walls, recording and describing the interiors, inmates, and therapeutic and reformative practices they encountered in letters, diaries, and articles. Surprisingly, the vast majority of these visitors were not members of the medical or legal elite but were ordinary people. Prisons, Asylums, and the Public argues that, rather than existing in isolation, these institutions were closely connected to the communities beyond their walls. Challenging traditional interpretations of public visiting, Janet Miron examines the implications and imperatives of visiting from the perspectives of officials, the public, and the institutionalized -- sheds new light on popular nineteenth-century attitudes towards the insane and the criminal. BOOK - Catherine Tekakwitha: Her Life "Lily of the Mohawks"By Fr. Peirre Cholenec, S.J. Her Spiritual Advisor and Biographer Translated to English by William Lonc S.J. Published by William Lonc, Toronto, 2002 Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, baptised as Catherine Tekakwitha and informally known as Lily of the Mohawks, is a Roman Catholic saint, who was an Algonquin–Mohawk virgin and religious laywoman, commonly known as "Lily of the Mohawks". The story told in this book is based on a xerographic photocopy of a type-written transcript of a document... based on Fr. Cholenec's original Autograph. Thus, the story is told by an eye-witness -- who was her spiritual director -- of the events in her life from the time she arrived at the Jesuit mission just outside of Montreal, known at that time as the Sault Saint-Louis or Saint-Louis Rapids. The English translation is meant to follow the French rather closely, but with an ear to producing an easily readable story in English. ISBN 978-0-9730161-2-3 More information

BOOK - Tracing Your Ancestors through Death Records (UK), A Guide For Family HistoriansBy Celia Heritage Published by Pen and Sword Books, S. Yorkshire, UK, 2013 Of all family history sources, death records are probably the least used by researchers. They are, however, frequently the most revealing of records, giving a far greater insight into our ancestors' lives and personalities than those records created during their lifetime. Celia Heritage leads readers through the various types of death records, showing how they can be found, read and interpreted – and how to glean as much information as possible from them. In many cases they can be used as a starting point for developing your family history research into other equally rewarding areas. This highly readable handbook is packed with useful information and helpful research advice. In addition, a thought-provoking final chapter looks into the repercussions of death – its effects on the surviving members of the family and the fact that a premature death could sometimes affect the family for generations to come. BOOK - Notre-Dame de Montréal [RC], Selected Records of Baptism, Marriage and Burial for Early Scots and Irish 1775-1810 Compiled by Duncan (darby) MacDonald Originally published by MacDonald Research Centre, Brockville, 1992 This edition Published by MacDonald Research*., Milton, 2012 Duncan (darby) MacDonald U.E. was an active member of the Clan Donald society in Canada when he undertook the task of transcribing all "births" [baptisms], marriages and "deaths" [burials] of Scots and Irish recorded in the parish registers of Notre-Dame de Montreal Roman Catholic Church. What he sought were records of families who later settled in and near Cornwall/Stormont in Ontario (Upper Canada) or were related to those families. MacDonald also noted that he included parish records of "some family names of English, German, French, etc origin which your author/editor felt would be of interest". That means that Mr. MacDonald did not do a complete transcription, but focused on the many families that complimented his personal research interests. It is important for those considering purchasing this book to refer to the index to ensure that the records you seek are included. The Index is available here. As we were preparing this book for reprinting it was immediately noticable that a goodly number of events recorded here are for people from, living in, or going to places distant from Montreal including present-day Ontario, United States, and overseas.
