When starting the Family Tree Maker program, I get the following message: "An error has occurred in OLE2NLS.DLL. Please try reinstalling OLE." How do I fix this?

Answer:

This error is a Microsoft error that occurs primarily in Windows 95 and 98. Microsoft corrected the problem in Windows ME. Upgrading your operating system to Windows ME or later is one way to permanently resolve this error. To work around the error in earlier versions of Windows, try the following:

Verify Windows Regional Settings
  1. Click Start then Settings and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Regional Settings icon.
  3. Click the Regional Settings tab.
  4. Click on the dropdown list of languages.
  5. If there is more than one instance of English (United States) on the list, select any other entry than the one that is currently selected. If there is only one instance of English (United States) on the list, select any other language than the one that is currently selected.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. As soon as the computer has restarted, return to this list and make sure that only one English (United States) is shown in the list.
  8. If English (United States) is not already selected, choose English (United States) and restart your computer again.
If the above changes works but the next time you start your computer you again receive the same error message, try the following.
  1. Go to Regional Settings in the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Right click this icon, select Shortcut, and agree to have it placed on your Desktop.
  3. Go to your Desktop, right-click your mouse on the icon and select Cut.
  4. Right click on the Start Button and click on Open.
  5. Double click on Programs folder.
  6. Right-click your mouse on the screen and select Paste to put the Regional Settings shortcut icon in this folder.
  7. Exit everything and reboot.
  8. When the screen for Regional Settings comes up on your desktop, just click either option to close it.
Keep this shortcut in your Windows Start-Up folder so that the Regional Settings popup appears each time you start your computer.

Verify Microsoft Outlook Express Settings

    Start Outlook Express.
  1. Click the Tools menu
  2. Click Options...
  3. Click the Read tab
  4. Click the International Settings... button
  5. Make sure the checkbox to "Use default encoding for all incoming messages" is checked
  6. Click OK twice to save your changes.
Please note that OLE2NLS.dll is a Windows file. We cannot make any changes to this file. If you cannot resolve this error by the methods mentioned above, you will need to contact Microsoft or consider upgrading your operating system. Windows ME and XP do not display this error.
