Removing "Duplicate" Married Cousins From an FTM Chart

Donna Di Lello asks I have cousins that married and the Family Tree Maker ancestor tree divides, duplicating the same people. For example Suzy and Sam, 1st cousins, married. Their parents only show up once in the index, yet when a put up an ancestor tree, they are shown twice. This takes up a lot of space (in an Ancestor Chart) and is confusing and I am wondering if there is anyway of merging them on the tree.

Answer:
There are lots of jokes about about people who's ancestors married cousins. In my experience there are very few multi-generation family trees that do not have cousins marrying. That said, keep this article handy even if you haven't discovered any married cousins yet... there is a high probability that you will need it :)

Because "Suzy and Sam" are related in two different ways they will appear on two places in your Ancestor Chart. The good news is that you can produce an Ancestor Chart with them appearing in both places, or appearing only once.

To have them appear once only, Click on CONTENTS, then click on OPTIONS. A small dialog box will appear .... the centre option is "Include duplicate ancestors each time they appear" . If there is a check mark in the small white box beside this line, click on it so that it disappears.

The very same process is used in Descendant Charts, with the esception that the dialog box will provide the option option is "Include duplicate descendants each time they appear"

This should solve your problem :)
