1877 Dorcas Society Donations (Newfoundland)

The Dorcas Society was a charitable organization founded by Sarah Ward (wife of Rev. Daniel S. Ward) in 1824. The aim of the Dorcas Society was to provide clothing for the poor. Members canvassed businesses, firms and also relied on volunteer donations to raise money. The success of the St. John's Dorcas Society led to the founding of Societies in Harbour Grace, Carbonear and Twillingate.

Sue O'Neill has transcribed an original article that appeared in the Harbor Grace Standard and Conception Advertiser on February 10, 1877. It contains a list of donations, with the names of those contributing.
