Upcoming Genealogy Programming on Network TV
Posted 18 January 2012
By J. Brian Gilchrist

J. Brian Gilchrist
The popular series (Who do you think you are?) returns to NBC beginning Friday Feb. 3, at 8:00 p.m. local time. As usual a variety of people with public profiles have agreed to have their ancestry and family history investigated: Martin Rob Lowe, Helen Hunt, Reba McEntire, Blair Underwood, Edie Falco, Rashida Jones, Jerone Bettis, Paula Deen, Jason Sudeikis and Martin Sheen ...

PBS will be offering another season of "Finding your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr." beginning Sunday March 25, at 8:00 pm and the line-up includes: Barbara Walters, Robert Downey Jr., Martha Stewart, John Legend, Branford Marsalis, Rick Warren, and Kevin Bacon.

The great thing about both these shows is that they show that not all family history and genealogy can done done by searching computer datatbases - rather that is only part of the process. The popularity of these episodes is also due in part to the viewer not only learns about new resources to use in their own searching but there is also the "wow factor" in being shown Archives, Libraries and research facilities around the world that hold the irreplaceable documents of human history.

Let me suggest something to consider: Many of us belong to "book clubs" - so why not invite a couple of genealogy buddies over for dinner and watch the show together and discuss the results over dessert after the end of the show ...

So get the dinner dishes done, put the answering machine on, sit down with a beverage of choice and enjoy!
