Merton (south London, UK) burial records added to Deceased Online
Posted 26 August 2010
By Richard Gray, on behalf of www.deceasedonline.com
MERTON has become the first south London Borough to place its burial records on a national database website so that online searchers worldwide can access burial information and documents for the Council's four cemeteries. Merton Council is the fifth London authority to sign up with www.deceasedonline.com but, with nearly 100,000 burial records dating back to 1883, this represents the highest number of records from any London council currently on the website.
Deceased Online was launched 18 months ago and incorporates a range of burial and cremation records from councils and other authorities across the UK. It has been set up so that users of the website globally can search for subjects without needing to know where they died or were buried or cremated. This is a major advantage for family historians and genealogists searching London ancestors.
Visitors to the Deceased Online website can search the database free of charge and if they find their chosen person, the range of records available is then listed. To access and download these costs £1.50 each for the current Merton records which comprise the burial and grave information as well as digital scans of all burial register pages. It is hoped that in time Merton will add other linked records such as maps of cemeteries which indicate the exact location of each grave so that relatives, ancestors and other interested parties can easily find the grave.
Councillor Martin Whelton, Merton Council cabinet member for community and culture said:
"It is excellent that Merton is able to work with Deceased Online to provide this new online service for residents, and indeed for anyone around the world that might have a connection to the borough.
"Merton is committed to keeping costs low whilst still offering quality services and this is just one example where both residents and the council will be better off in both time and money for introducing this new service. I hope that budding family historians take the opportunity to get involved and find out more."
The new website service also means that the old registers can be archived safely to prevent damage from use and environmental degradation and will also bring improved efficiencies to the cemeteries' admin and office services.
The four Merton cemeteries on the Deceased Online database are:
- Church Road Cemetery, Mitcham, CR4 3BE (also known as St Peter and St Paul's Cemetery)
- Gap Road Cemetery, Wimbledon, SW19 8JA (also known as Wimbledon Cemetery)
- London Road Cemetery, Mitcham, CR4 3LA
- Merton and Sutton Joint Cemetery, Morden, SM4 4NW (Garth Road)
Deceased Online's Head of Marketing, Richard Gray, said of the new Merton data: "The database website is now really beginning to build in London with the inclusion of all Merton Council's burial records. We now have records from five of the capital's 32 borough councils and we expect this to double within the next 6-12 months. In addition to this, the other existing councils will shortly be adding substantially more burial and cremation data which will be a major bonus for the website and to Londoners and their ancestors researching family history".
The Deceased Online website continues to add data from many other areas across the UK and we will shortly be announcing further additions from southwest to northern England as well as Scotland.
