Posted 20 January 2010
By Diane Allengame and Brian Gilchrist
We're writing to let you know of upcoming changes at the Peel Heritage Complex (Brampton, Ontario) which will affect our ability to provide archival services. We hope that in providing this information to you as early as possible you will be able to plan and accommodate the pending service interruptions
First, the good news. The Region of Peel has received Infrastructure Stimulus funding to upgrade our exhibition and storage capacities. Work has already begun on the building to the south of the old Peel County Courthouse, which, by 2011, will house the new Art Gallery. As well, changes to the existing buildings will create a revitalized Museum & Archives.
In order to prepare for changes to our storage areas, effective January 4, 2010, the Archives is closed on Mondays. Regular Reading Room services will be available Tuesday through Friday, with limited Saturday afternoon service until the end of February, 2010. Effective March 1, 2010, the Reading Room will be closed for a period of approximately 15 months.
Access to information about the collection and to the records will be provided as follows:
- Requests for bylaws, school records, land & property records made by Regional staff or delegates, area municipal staff or delegates, school board employees, and Land Registry Office staff will be serviced as follows:
- Requests for images -can only be serviced if digital or microform copies exist
- Requests for information -can be received by letter, phone email: if necessary. records will be retrieved once a week and made available to the requestor at a location to be determined. Please note photocopy charges remain in place.
Requests for similar documents made by legal, heritage and cultural professionals will be processed in the same way.
Requests for family history information patrons will be redirected, where possible, to other institutions holding relevant information.
All other enquires will be answered as time permits. Resources currently available in the Reading Room such as microfilm copies of land and property records will be moved off-site and limited reference service may be provided via email if time permits.
There will be no public access to the facility at 9 Wellington or the temporary offsite location from March 1, 2010 until we reopen in the fall of 2011.
We know that this change in service may affect your ability to do your business or service your clients. Please know that we will do our utmost to provide help to you or redirect you to another archives.
As we move into construction, our website: www.peelheritagecomplex.org will contain weekly updates and will note when service is not available.
FAQ: Region of Peel Archives - Reading Room Closure
Why is the Archives closing?
The Region of Peel Archives is located within a facility which is undergoing a
major renovation. Due to demolition and construction activity, the entire site will
be considered a construction zone. The Region's general contractor will be in
control of the site for the duration of construction.
Why is it closing for so long?
The Archives cannot reopen until all the work on the site is complete and systems are operating normaHy. Even with the tight time lines In place this will not be achieved until the summer of 2011. If the Archives can open sooner, we will contact our patrons to let them know.
How can I access information?
We will be able to help you, but on the following priority basis:
- Regional and area municipal staff
- lawyers, consultants, Peel Board of Education and DPSSB staff
- genealogists
- other reference interests
Records will only be made available for use by prior arrangement with Brian Gilchrist and will have to be viewed at an off-site location.
Can I still make a donation of records?
Yes! Call us to discuss your records. We will arrange to meet with you to review. If the items are appropriate for the coilectlon, we wlii take them and store them appropriately.
Where do I get more information?
Please plan to visit us in the fall of 2011 when we take the wraps off this artistic and cultural gem and resume regular service In the Reading Room
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
