United Empire Loyalists Landing at Adolphustown
Posted 04 June 2009
By Brian Tackaberry UE, Bay of Quinte Branch President

The Bay of Quinte Branch of the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada (UELAC) will be marking the 225th Anniversary of the Landing of the United Empire Loyalists at Adolphustown, Ontario and the eventual establishment of the Province of Ontario. It is on the site of the United Empire Loyalist Heritage Centre and Park that the Loyalists landed on 16 June 1784.

The main day of celebration during the conference will be on Saturday, 13 June 2009.

This year the Landing Event will be featuring a large encampment of various military re-enactment units of the Northern Brigade, including the King's Royal Yorkers, King's Rangers, Butler's Rangers, Queen's Rangers, New Jersey Volunteers, Maryland Loyalists, 84th Highland Emigrants, Indian Allied Forces, British and Crown Forces, Royal Artillery and Yorker Guns, as well as a flotilla of seven bateaux. There will also be civilian re-enactors, artisans and suttlers with supplies for display and sale. There is also a possibility that some Rebel American Units will attend. They will be easy targets for the hardy band of Loyalists and their allies.

The encampment group will be on the grounds of the park doing various activities throughout the day, including re-enactments of the actual Loyalist Landing, musket volleys and military tactical displays both on land and in the water.

There will be performances by the Loyalist Fife and Drum Corps and a wreath laying ceremony in the late afternoon at the UEL Monument and Cemetery in the Park. The Loyalist Cemetery on this site was established in 1784 soon after the first band of Loyalists arrived.

This encampment will show what it looked like back in the summer of 1784

The UEL Monument was erected by the Province in 1884 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Loyalists in Ontario and is the oldest UEL Monument in Ontario. This encampment will show what the site looked like back in the summer of 1784 with the arrival of the various Loyalist groups in the Bay of Quinte area. Many Loyalists from across Canada can trace their families back to some of these Loyalist families.

In addition to the historical re-enactments and displays, there will be a display and sales area featuring a variety of our Loyalist Branches, Ontario Genealogical Society, and other genealogical and historical societies as well as commercial vendors. Refreshments will also be available on the grounds during the day. Plans are still underway as we are getting more and more confirmations from groups wishing to take part in this historic event to mark the 225th Anniversary of the Loyalists in Ontario. Many of the re-enactors will be camping overnight on the park grounds and will be still on site during Sunday Morning. More information can be found on the branch website.

For those who are registered for the Dominion UEL Conference, the cost of this event is covered as part of the FULL CONFERENCE PACKAGE.

We encourage Loyalists who are not registered for the conference to come out with their friends and family for the day. General admission is $5 per person, $2 for children 12 and under, and there is a family rate of $15 for a car.

The general public is welcome to come.

The UELHCP is located on the Loyalist Parkway, west of Kingston or south of Napanee and is easily accessible from all directions. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and wind down at around 4:00 p.m.

MARK SATURDAY 13 JUNE 2009 on your calendar and come out to see the living history of our UEL ancestors as we celebrate the LOYALIST SETTLEMENT EXPERIENCE 225.
