Don't Miss the British Isles Genealogy Convention in Ottawa This September
Posted 03 August 2008
By John D. Reid, Anglo-Celtic Connections Blog

Genealogists in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec have become accustomed to welcoming Rick and Sandra Roberts to Ottawa twice a year, in the spring to OGS Ottawa Branch's Gene-o-Rama, in the fall to the conference of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO). They come with a trailer loaded with a selection of Global Genealogy's catalog of materials.

This year's BIFHSGO conference is 19-21 September at Library and Archives Canada, and Global Genealogy will be back again -- Global have been coming for 14 years -- as long as the conference has been held. As well as purchasing, folks will be taking advantage of the opportunity to pick Rick's brains, especially on genealogy software. This year, on Friday 19 September, he'll present a pre-conference seminar on the groundbreaking new Legacy 7.

Global has promised to bring lots of copies of the recent acclaimed guide " Finding Your Canadian Ancestors: A Beginner's Guide " by Sherry Irvine and Dave Obee. It's not just for beginner's. Sherry is the featured speaker at the conference and will be leading off the presentations with the Friday evening Don Whiteside Lecture "Genealogy with Wings: Reflections of a Family Historian in an Age of Techno-enthusiasm." Sherry will also be signing copies of the book in between giving two other presentations.

BIFHSGO is also delighted to have Chris Watts, sometime consultant at The (UK) National Archives, coming back to Ottawa. He will speak on English Occupational Records; Records of soldiers in the British Army, 1760-1913; and British Merchant Navy Seaman Records.

Here's a tip. Chris will be giving another, different, presentation for the OGS Toronto Branch on Monday 22 September.

Other BIFHSGO conference speakers include Alison Hare on citations, Glenn Wright on fraternal societies and Marian Press on libraries for genealogy. There's lots more including a computer room with free access to subscription databases. It's a great conference, and great value. Read about the full conference program on the society website and enjoy the convenience of registering online with a discount for registration before 15 August.

If you've been meaning to come to research at Library and Archives Canada don't miss the opportunity to take in some excellent presentations over the weekend and research before and after the conference.

And a tip for the frugal - if you're coming to the conference and see something in Global's catalog you'd like to purchase, drop them an email and request they bring it to Ottawa -- you'll save the mailing costs.
