Immigrants to Canada from China
Posted 27 May 2008
By Sylvie Tremblay, Acting Head, Canadian Genealogy Centre, Client Services Division, Library and Archives Canada
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce the launch of a new online database, Immigrants from China. This project was created in partnership with the Canadian Genealogy Centre and the University of British Columbia, and was partly funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online Program.
This database includes over 98,000 references to Chinese immigrants who arrived in Canada between 1885 and 1949. Site visitors can search by name or year of arrival to view a digitized image of the immigration record. Immigrants from China replaces and includes the records from the online database, Port of New Westminster Register of Chinese Immigration. Immigrants from China will form part of an upcoming LAC virtual exhibition about Canada's early immigrants from China, scheduled to launch in late 2008.
You are invited to visit the database
The contributions of many Library and Archives staff were instrumental in the success of this project, and their efforts are much appreciated.
For more information, please contact Project Manager Jennifer Nicol by telephone at 613-996-8223 or by email.
