QUEBECIn the Province of Quebec, the responsibility for registration of vital events fell to the church. These civil registers have been in existence since the early seventeenth century. In 1926 the registration of births and deaths was allowed centrally for those who did not belong to a church. However, until 1969, all marriages were expected to take place in a church. Essentially, church records were accepted as the legal record for civil registration. Two copies of all registers were required to be kept, one in the parish, the other in the office of the district protonotary. After 100 years the records are transferred to the appropriate Regional Branch of the Archives Nationale du Québec. Note: In order to locate a record of birth, marriage or death in Québec, researchers are usually required to know the religion of the person, the date of the event and the community where the person lived. MODERN RECORDS In simple terms the official government registration and collection of vital events centrally did not begin in Quebec until 1994. This radical modern reform has resulted in the need for the government to communicate clearly with people. For this reason they created leaflets in both English and French to explain the change and what is involved. These leaflets, along with most records since 1900 are available from: Direction de l'etat civil Service à la clientèle In Quebec City: Le Directeur de l'état civil 205, rue Montmagny QUÉBEC, Québec G1N 2Z9 Telephone: (418) 643-3900 In Montreal: Le Directeur de l'état civil 2050, rue de Bleury, 6e étage Montréal Québec H3A 2J5 Telephone: (514) 864-3900 Toll free within Québec: (800) 567-3900 Fax: (418) 646-3255 (Québec) or (514) 864-4563 (Montréal) Email: etatcivil@dec.gouv.qc.ca Website: http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/default.html The Application Form necessary to order a certificate is available online in Portable Document Format (pdf) at: http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/certificate-copy-act.html Researchers can now use the online order forms to request vital records. Payment can also be made online using a major credit card on the government's secure webform. Online orders are processed within 1 business day following receipt of your request. Learn more about the online secure ordering service by choosing the Birth, Marriage or Death links at: http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/default.html HISTORIC RECORDS Records more than 100 years old are in the custody of the regional offices of the Archives nationales du Québec (ANQ). The ANQ requires exact dates before certificates can be issued. Unfortunately, the ANQ cannot conduct extensive research. If you do not have the necessary details or information to order registrations, you might wish to hire a researcher to search for and obtain copies of the appropriate records on your behalf. The Quebec Family History Society (P.O. Box 1026, POINTE-CLAIRE, Quebec, H9S 1N9) can help by providing a list of researchers. Regional Offices Archives nationales du Québec

Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH) is a program that began in 1966 at the Université de Montréal to begin an exhaustive reconstruction of the population of Quebec from the beginnings of French colonization in the seventeenth century. The PRDH database is mainly based on the approximately 690,000 baptismal, marriage, and burial certificates dated prior to 1800 that come from 153 parishes, missions, and institutions. This massive project has come to fruition in the form of a computerized population register, composed of biographical files on all individuals of European ancestry who lived in the St. Lawrence Valley. The file for each individual gives the date and place of birth, marriage(s), and death, as well as family and conjugal ties with other individuals. This basic information is complemented by various socio-demographic characteristics drawn from documents: socio-professional status and occupation, ability to sign his or her name, place of residence, and, for immigrants, place of origin. The PRDH site includes Acadians who settled in Quebec, but it does not cover Acadia itself. How to access the PRDH: http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/fr/main.htm or in english at: http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/main.htm Researchers can navigate the site free of charge and also conduct a first-level search. The information that you can obtain at the first level will be limited, but it will allow you to check whether the data base contains information on the ancestor(s) for whom you want to launch a search. For further information it will be necessary to take out a subscription which will enable you to obtain complete information and to navigate between the different components of the data base.
