World War One Records of Newfoundland Regiment now Digitized
By: Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles
The Newfoundland Regiment and The Great War Database
The personal records of the 6000+ men who enlisted in the Newfoundland Regiment during World War One are now available online.
Because Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949, their military service records did not suffer the same culling that the Canadian service records suffered a couple of years prior. The Canadian government made a decision in the late 1940s to cull the military service records from World War One and keep only the" most important documents". Newfoundland refrained from the cull, resulting in much more complete record sets for the Newfoundland Regiment.
 Soldiers from the Newfoundland Regiment
Newfoundland and Labrador spent heavily during the First World War to raise, train, and equip its own overseas regiment. Its contributions to the war effort amounted to roughly $35 million dollars and increased the public debt from $30.5 million before the war to $42 million by 1919. The following records may be found in service files, though some files contain more records than others:
- Attestation Paper
- Squadron, Troop, Battery and Company Conduct Sheet
- Medical Examination Form
- Allotment Form
- Postal Telegraphs
- Extract - Recording promotions, demotions, transfers, casualties, awards, etc.
- Will - Handwritten and/or typed
- Inventory of Effects
- Prisoner of War Fund pledge form - Some men gave over $10.00 per year to the fund (taken quarterly from pay).
- Statement of Prisoner of War (taken upon escape or release)
- Application for Separation Allowance
- Application for Pension.
- Application for War Service Gratuity.
- Application for Overseas Transport for wife and/or child(ren) of a soldier to come to Newfoundland.
- Report (or Proceedings) of a Medical Board
- Descriptive Return of a Soldier Discharged on Account of Disability
The official website has a complete description of what is contained in each of the forms listed above.
What struck me when I first browsed the alphabetical list of enlisted men, is the extemely high percentage of soldiers who did not survive the war.
