243,000 more burial records from north Scotland to south Devon added to Deceased Online
By: Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles
Deceased Online has provided the following news item for the information of readers of the Global Gazette. At this time the English and Scottish database includes about 750,000 burials/cremations and is regional. However, the site's developers have ambitious plans for the future that make it worthwhile to keep an eye on this easy-to-use online resource:
"What do Scotland's third largest city, a small seaside Devon town, the resting place of the tragic exiled Polish war-time leader and a leafy idyll in rural Hertfordshire have in common?
What links these interesting and disparate areas is that their family history will be coming to life through the availability of burial records on Deceased Online, the unique national database website. Between now and the end of July, around 243,000 burial records going back to the late 18th century will be added to www.deceasedonline.com comprising computerised records, digital scans of burial registers and details of grave contents.
Details of the different areas are as follows:
- Aberdeen City Archives will be making available approximately 192,000 burial records across 10 complete cemeteries: Allenvale Cemetery (1875-1966); John Knox Churchyard (1837-1894); Nellfield Cemetery (1834-1941); Nigg Cemetery (1878-1923); Old Machar Churchyard (1863-1950); St Clement's Kirkyard (1855-1927); St Nicholas Kirkyard (1824-1965); Spital Churchyard and St Peter's Cemetery (1769-1972); and Trinity Cemetery (1882-1940). Four of these (Nellfield, Old Machar, Grove and St Clement's) with 24,000 records are already online with the remainder due to be uploaded over the next 6-8 weeks. Deceased Online hopes to add more records for the area shortly and we will make announcements as soon as possible.
- A long way south of the border in the South Hams district of Devon, 3,100 burial records from two cemeteries for the small coastal town of Salcombe are available online now. The cemeteries are Shadycombe, opened in 1879 and with 2,100 records, and the wonderfully named Bonfire Hill with 1,000 burial records and opened in 1941.
- The historic and picturesque town of Newark in Nottinghamshire has a fascinating cemetery opened in 1856 and Deceased Online has just added all 40,000 records. Although the area is perhaps more usually associated with Robin Hood, the Polish war leader General Wladyslaw Sikorski, who died in controversial circumstances in an air crash in Gibraltar, was buried in Newark Cemetery in 1943, his remains repatriated to Poland 50 years later. The cemetery has a large area and memorial dedicated to Polish soldiers and military stationed in the UK during WW2.
- Although Carpender's Park Cemetery is located near Watford in Hertfordshire, it's actually administered by the London Borough of Brent in northwest London. We've just added approximately 10,250 burial records for this relatively new cemetery opened in 1954. This means that on the Deceased Online database, we now have records for nearly 40,000 burials across four cemeteries from the London Borough of Brent. The other three cemeteries included in the Deceased Online database are: Alperton, Willesden Old and Wembley Old burial grounds which date back to 1865 and 1877 respectively. Between them, they provide quite a substantial insight into family history records for these old areas of northwest London.
Deceased Online was launched at the Who Do You Think You Are Live exhibition in 2009 and is the only internationally marketed database website that obtains statutory burial and cremation records from burial and cremation authorities across the UK. This year, the database is expected to increase to some 4 million records. Speaking of the latest additions, Richard Gray, Head of Marketing said:
"We've now included on Deceased Online records for a major Scottish city, as well as the whole of Angus region, and our plans are well advanced to add much more data across Scotland. Our development for the rest of the UK is also going very well and during the rest of the Summer we expect to add many new areas and hundreds of thousands more burial and cremation records to the website.
"The response from local family historians, genealogist and private researchers to the quality of data that we are making available has been extremely positive. To include this level of detail and make agreements with the data copyright holders takes time, but we are building a comprehensive, high quality database that is easy to access and at a reasonable price."
Visitors to the Deceased Online website can search the database free of charge, to see if records are available for those they are researching. If they are, users may purchase access to these at prices mostly around £1.50 to £2.00.
Registration on Deceased Online is free of charge and registered users can opt to receive emails when new data uploads are available. We therefore urge people to register so that they know immediately when new areas of the UK are added to the database.
About Deceased Online:
- Deceased Online was formally launched to the public at the end of February 2009. It specialises in working with local authorities (and other data owners) to provide a website portal for statutory burial and cremation records. In most instances, local authorities are responsible for the disposal of the deceased - through burial and cremation - and for maintaining appropriate records pertaining to each person. Deceased Online also obtains records from privately managed cemeteries and crematoria and other selected data copyright holders.
- Deceased Online is unique in that it is the only national internet database search facility offering central access to burial and cremation statutory registers
- Deceased Online is a joint enterprise between Gower Consultants Ltd and Manuscripti Ltd. Gower Consultants (www.gowerconsultants.com) is an independent computer systems and software supplier, founded in 1982, and working for most of this time within the cemetery and cremation management sector. Gower offers a range of IT products and management services successfully used by the industry for nearly 25 years. Manuscripti (www.manuscripti.com) provides scanning, archiving and reproduction solutions specialising in working with and preserving old and fragile documents and books and particularly working with local authorities and other public bodies.
- The way that Deceased Online works for the consumer is as follows. It is free to register on the website and users can search for their subjects (ancestors and other family members) free of charge. Tools and 'advance search' facilities enable searchers to fine-tune their search by various name options, regions, year ranges, burial or cremation and through 'wild card' options. If and when records are found for the searched-for individual, the user has the opportunity to purchase these and download and print as required. Prices are mostly £1.50 for standard register scans and computerised records, £2.00 for photographs of headstones or memorials and £5.00 for the range of maps (see the full range of charges on the website). Users purchase credits (minimum £3.00 value) in order to buy records.
- The revenue that is generated is shared 50-50 between the council supplying the relevant purchased data and Deceased Online net of bank charges.
- Currently 12 councils have placed their records onto Deceased Online and it is expected that this will rise to over 20 by the end of the year. It is estimated that there will be approximately 4 million burial and cremation records on the website by the end of 2010 and this is expected to grow to around 10 million at the end of 2011.
