HST Coming on Canada Day... What does it mean?
By: Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles
Canada Day is now just ONE MONTH AWAY!
We want you to enjoy fun in the sun, patios, BBQs and fireworks to the fullest, but we also want you to be aware of the new sales tax (HST) coming into effect on July 1, 2010, and what it means to our Canadian customers.
Here's what you need to know:
- The HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is a value-added sales tax that combines PST and GST in some Canadian provinces.
- Starting July 1st, 2010, all businesses are required to collect the federally administered HST from customers located in HST enabled provinces. HST is applied based on which province a product is delivered to. It is not based on the province it was shipped from.
- HST provinces include Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, British Columbia and Ontario.
- Sales tax on books will not increase. The provincial portion of the HST does not apply to books, resulting in a HST of 5% on books rather than the full amount. Previously 5% GST was applied to books delivered in Canada.
- Sales tax on other products does not increase (except BC). Everything else that GlobalGenealogy sells (other than books) is subject to full HST in HST provinces. We are not required to collect provincial sales taxes from residents of none-HST provinces and territories including: Alberta, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Yukon. Previously we were not required to collect provincial sales tax from British Columbia residents.
- No Canadian sales taxes on products shipped to USA or other countries.
The HST rates are as follow:
- British Columbia: 12% (books 5%)
- New Brunswick: 13% (books 5%)
- Newfoundland and Labrador: 13% (books 5%)
- Nova Scotia: 15% (books 5%)
- Ontario: 13% (books 5%)
The GST rates are as follow:
- Alberta: 5%
- Manitoba: 5%
- Northwest Territories: 5%
- Nunavut: 5%
- Prince Edward Island: 5%
- Quebec: 5%
- Saskatchewan: 5%
- Yukon: 5%
Please be aware of these new developments, as the HST tax is coming into effect on Canada Day, now just one month away!
For more information regarding the HST, please visit the official government site.
