New OGS Special Interest Group (SIG) -- British Home Children
22 March 2010
By: Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles
In December of 2009 the Canadian federal government designated 2010 as the Year of the British Home Child, This came about as a result of Brant MP, Phil McColeman's private member's motion asking Parliament to declare 2010 the Year of the British Home Child. McColeman said in an interview before the vote "It's a chapter in Canada's history that is far too little known". The motion received unanimous support from all parties in the House of Commons.
Now the Ontario Genealogical Society is interested in forming a Home Child Special Interest Group(SIG) to support the four million or so descendants of the one hundred thousand plus Home Children who were relocated from Britain to Canada between the mid-nineteeth century and early twentieth century.
One Family's Story...
The Darnbrough Brothers
Left to right: William, Harry and my wife's (Sandra's) grandfather Walter Darnbrough.
Both parents died prematurely leaving the three boys, a young sister and a step-brother in the care of their near-destitute teenaged sister.
An aunt provided occasional meals but she had her own economic problems that prevented her from providing ongoing care for her deceased sister's young family.
Thier childhood history is filled with tragedy -- father died at 38 from consumption in 1898 -- mother followed in September
1906 from "dropsy and tumour" -- their aged grandmother in Leeds infirmary.
This photo was taken at the Barnardo Home on July 29, 1907, the day of their admission to Leopold House, Stepny, London, UK. The family was from Leeds. Walter's admission document states that they were "orphans in half-starving condition".
Walter emigrated to Canada with a Barnardos party on March 12 1908
on the ship SS Dominion, arriving in Halifax nine days later. He
was placed on a farm on the north shore of Lake Erie near Port Colborne. We know
nothing about his experiences on the farm. What is known is that
he lived a long, full and productive life, serving in the Canadian army
in both World Wars (decorated for bravery), was active in his community (Scarborough), and
raised a large and loving family.
Walter's story is one of personal success that was assisted by the British Home Child program. Not all were so fortunate. |
