Surname Distribution and Density by Location Published: 24 August 2009

Many family history buffs and others are interested in knowing the geographical distribution of their surname.
Two years ago we attended a genealogical conference that was organized by the Manitoba Genealogical Society in Winnipeg. My interest was captured by Howard Mathieson who delivered a segment on one-name-studies. Howard was kind enough to pen a two part article on his "Dangerfield" one-name-study for the Global Gazette. Since that time I've spent more time thinking about, and tracing the diaspora of our personal ancestral families.
It turns out that there are a growing number of online tools to help us understand where persons with specific surnames have migrated and settled. Most of the results are based on contemporary records such as telephone directory databases. Another source that is often used in the UK is analysis of the 1881 census of the United Kingdom.
