What To Do When You Accidentally Add The Same Person To Legacy Twice
Published: 13 August 2009
By: Rick Roberts,   Biography & Archived Articles

One of the questions that I am most frequently asked regarding genealogy software is, "how do I fix it when I accidentally add the same person to my database twice". Last Saturday, while exhibiting at the Irish Genealogy Workshop that was organized by the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, I was asked that question twice. In both cases the questions came from Legacy Family Tree users. When we got home I found the same question in my email inbox from another Legacy user.

The solution is very simple. However, many fear that they are the only ones to have accidentally added the same person to our family files twice. Compounding that fear is a concern that they will ruin their family file while trying to fix the duplication problem.

Don't feel that you are alone in having entered the same person twice. It happens to everyone... and it will happen again. The problem is easy to fix with the tools that Legacy Family Tree software has built into it.

Process for merging duplicate individuals in a Legacy family file:
Before you start this process make sure that you have a recent backup copy of your family file in the event that you make a serious error during merging.

    1. You can easily merge the two instances of the same person by pressing the Merge icon on the toolbar.

    2. Choose Manual Merge.

    3. An automatic backup dialogue box appears, click Continue

    4. The Merge Two Individuals screen appears with current person loaded on the left.

    5. The 'Merge Two Individuals' screen

    6. If this is not one of the people you want to merge, press the Select Left button and choose the correct individual from the Name List.

    7. Next, press the Select Right button and choose the other person. When the two have been loaded, you can see the differences in information and choose which pieces you want to keep. To actually merge the two individuals into one, press the Merge Right Individual into Left Individual button.

When you have finished merging those two instances of the same person into one record, repeat the process with the next people that you have in duplicate.

That's all there is to it.
