Update on the Canada Day Celebration with "Robert Land, Esq." in Campbellville. Column published: 26 June 2008
By: Rick Roberts, Biography & Archived Articles
Wow. What a response we've had from those interested in comiing to our Canada Celebration (July 1st, from 2-4 pm) with "Robert Land, Esq." Loyalist Soldier, Spy, and First Settler of the nearby city of Hamilton, Ontario! Lots of emails and phone calls hint that we will enjoy an enthusiastic crowd of history buffs, United Empire Loyalists, and Robert Land descendants at this year's celebration.
In case you missed the announcement about the free Canada Day event that is being hosted by Global Genealogy, we've repeated it further down this page.
Robert Land descendants please note:You would think that we'd have anticipated it, but to our surprise, we have been contacted by several Robert Land decendants who plan to attend. We are preparing name tags for those Robert Land descendants who are interested in meeting others with this common ancestor. The name tags are free and can be picked up before the event at the Global Genealogy building in Campbellville. Just enquire at the cashiering desk and you will be provided with a free name-tag identifying you as a descendant of Robert Land.
Fawne Stratford-Devai will be onsite:
Prolific genealogy author, educator and "Ancestors in the Attic" genealogist, Fawne Stratford-Devai will be onsite at the Global Genealogy bookstore ( 1-5pm ) to answer your genealogy questions, and to autograph her books.
Come rain or shine! :
The event is planned for the Campbellville Conservation area (outside venue). However, as a contingency for bad weather, we've taken the precaution of renting the local Campbellville Lion's Hall so that you can still see "Robert Land", even if it rains. The Lions Hall is directly across the street from Global Genealogy, and immediately beside the park where the event is planned.
The Lions Cub parking lot has also been reserved to provide more parking spaces, regardless of how the weather turns out.
Repeat of our original annoucement:
Because of the great success of last year's Canada Day celebration with "Sir John A. Mcdonald", we are sponsoring another exciting day of Canadian history, again show-casing the considerable talent of popular historical re-enactor David Morris.
Be our guests! Bring your family. Bring lawn chairs/blankets and don't forget your camera -- have some fun on Canada Day in Campbellville. Drop into Global Genealogy & History Shoppe for complimentary bottled water, coffee, tea and treats before and after the show! Come as you are, or dress in historical costume -- it will be a great day for all!
David Morris as Robert Land Esq. Soldier, Spy, and First Settler of Hamilton, Ontario
Popular historical re-enactor, David Morris, presents his historically accurate one-man show as early Ontario settler, Robert Land Esq.. Mr. Morris' interpretation of Robert Land is entertaining and educational for everyone from children to adults.
Robert Land has a remarkably interesting story. Born in 1736, Land was a British loyalist who was living in colonial New York at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War in 1776. His family, underwent great persecution at the hands of his American patriot neighbours - an experience shared by many loyalists during the same period. While serving as a messenger for the British, Land was dealt a particularly hard blow when he discovered his homestead in ashes and his family missing. His story ends in 1818, however, on a rather surprising note.
David Morris' monologue covers Robert Land's experiences from the beginning of the American Revolution through the conflict, the British loss of the colonies, to Land's subsequent migration and settlement in Upper Canada (Ontario).
Morris breathes life into the character of Robert Land, using humorous anecdotes and startling historical facts. The colourful personality of Robert Land shines through. David Morris knows how to make history interesting for all ages.
