Column published: 01 March 2007
By: Rick Roberts,   Biography & Archived Articles

We've recently learned of the passing of a well known and active participant in the heritage community in Canada. John Edwin Ruch was born on June 1, 1929 and passed away February 4, 2007. John will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The following is a copy of John's obituary.

John’s unique journey through life came to a pain-free end at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital where, for more than a year, he had received exceptional care from the staff in the ICU and on Ward 5NW.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sherry (née Elizabeth Sheridan), his daughter Carol Fox, Kamloops, B.C., grandchildren Jessica and Nicholas of Vancouver, his sister Nola (Cameron) Wilson of Niagara Falls, Ontario, brother-in-law Wilson (Mary Lou) Sheridan of Richmond, Virginia as well as nieces and nephews as far away as Australia.

John graduated from University of Toronto and obtained a Post Graduate diploma in Art History at the Courtauld Institute, London University, England. John played an active role in the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada where he was named Honorary Vice President. He was chairman of 2 Bicentennial Projects, one for the Montreal Branch and one for the Ottawa Branch. He was also active in the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada where he was Master of the Roll for many years, was an Honorary Fellow 1989 and Fellow 1998. He was Editor of Newsletters for the Ottawa Branches of these 2 organizations. He was recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal 2002. He contributed many scholarly researched articles to numerous international genealogical, heraldic and art historical journals.

Visitation was at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Sunday, February 11, 2007 from 2-5pm. The Funeral Service was held in the Chapel on Monday, February 12 at 1:00pm followed by a Reception in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. Cremation followed.

John had a life-long passion for heraldry. His personal coat of arms follows:
