BOOK REVIEW
By: Paul Milner, Park Ridge, Illinois

BOOK: Sketches Illustrating the Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada (Glengarry County, Ontario.)
    By J. S. MacDonell. ( 1893 )

Historical reprint by Global Heritage Press Inc., Milton, Ontario, Canada 2003. (originally published 1893)

    337 pp., Hardcover
What a wonderfully descriptive original title this book had: Sketches Illustrating the Early Settlement and History of Glengarry (County) in Canada. , Relating Principally to the Revolutionary War of 1775-83. The War of 1812-14 and the Rebellion of 1837-8 and the Services of the King’s Royal Regiment of New York, the 84th or Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, The Royal Canadian Volunteer Regiment of Foot, The Glengarry Fencible or British Highland Regiment, The Glengarry Light Infantry Regiment and the Glengarry Militia.

The text also offers many details, muster lists, clan census, copies of official and newspaper correspondence, battle honors and origins of immigrants.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the American Revolution, the United Empire Loyalists and the early settlement of Glengarry County. Unfortunately the reader is hampered with no table of contents [Editor's note: A new comprehensive Table of Contents has be added to both the 2010 printing, and to the 2010 CD eBook version] or index.

Paul Milner,
Park Ridge, Illinois.
