BOOK REVIEW
By: Paul Milner, Park Ridge, Illinois
TITLE: Books You Need to do Genealogy in Ontario: An annotated bibliography, 2nd Edition.
By Ryan Taylor
Published by Round Tower Books, Fort Wayne, Indiana 2000. (available from Global Genealogy & History Shoppe)
This edition is a goldmine, doubling the size of the first edition with lots more references. The book begins with a general section covering Ontario as a whole. This is followed by a section for each county. Each bibliographic citation provides the authors name, title of the publication, publisher, date, number of pages, whether it contains indexes and in many cases the ISBN number. There is often a brief annotation as to contents of the book.
The bibliography provides listings of the obvious genealogical resources but also includes historical and background titles. What is not included in the collection are local histories already identified in Barbara Aitken’s Local Histories of Ontario Municipalities, 1951-1977 and supplements (some modern histories are included); directories, cemetery transcriptions and church histories. However, guidance is given on how to obtain these non listed items for the relevant counties, informing the reader if collections have been published commercially or by the county chapter of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
This is a must for anyone doing Ontario research. Most of the cited publications are available at the Allen county Public Library in Ft. Wayne Indiana, which has built an excellent Canadian collection.
