BOOK - Beginners guide to German Genealogical Research
by: Thomsen's Genealogcial Center
Many family researchers who trace their ancestral lines into Germany immediately become discouraged by the language barrier. However, they do not realize that a great deal of the material they will encounter is quite simple to use. Often there are only a few words in German describing what happened to the person mentioned in the source. Most of the material the researcher deals with pertains to names in one form or another, such as given names or surnames, names of places, occupations, etc. The remaining information is usually quite easily translated with the help of a dictionary. The same genealogical terms are used over and over again.
As you become familiar with the genealogical terms in the basic records, you will also soon be able to master the Gothic script, which was used extensively in the records. This guide has sample letters of the handwriting to assist you in this task.
The degree of difficulty you may have with your research often depends on how much basic information you have accumulated before searching the original basic reecords. It is recommended that you study carefully the first steps outlined in this guide.
This book includes information on:
- The First Steps
- Useful Genealogical Research Tools
- German Research Aids
- The German Church Records
- Church Archives
- Germany 1871-1918
- Germany 1845-Present
- German Genealogical Terms
- Latin Genealogical Terms
- German Occupations
