Genealogists will rejoice to see this new edition of Pioneers of the Upper Ottawa, with its wealth of genealogical information about families in the Aylmer-Eardley-South Hull area. The original edition of 1906, published by a small press in Ottawa, has disappeared so thoroughly that even libraries have not found copies to place in their rare book rooms.
The core of the book, and the justification for republishing it after so many years of neglect, are the genealogies which occupy the last third of the volume. All the earliest families are listed, with information about who married whom, where migrant children have gone and whose farms various descendants occupy now.
Includes a new introduction and detailed index by noted genealogist, Ryan Taylor.
View a listing of all names that appear in the new index (46 pages in .pdf).
Family historians who are in search of both hard facts and narrative colour, will find both in this volume. Aside from the facts, this is the charm of Pioneers of the Upper Ottawa. Anson Gard's personality contributes to a narrative which is interesting even for those who have no connection with Aylmer or South Hull.
Reviews:
- This is a fine reprint of a rare volume for those with ancestors in this part of Quebec (Hull & Aylmer area). Read complete review
Paul Milner, Book Reviewer, Federation of Genealogical Societies' FORUM.
- "Anyone with a family connection in the region of Aylmer, Hull and Eardley will treasure this historical gem. It provides a glimpse of village life a century ago, its characters and interests, a life which has vanished and is now so remote we can scarcely imagine what it was like. The effervescent writing of Anson Gard offers it back to us, both for enjoyment and education."
