BOOK - Methodist Baptisms for Northern York County Ontario 1842-1896,
Compiled by: Ruth Burkholder.

Includes: Aurora, Georgina, Gwillimbury East and North, King, Newmarket and parts of Simcoe County.

The Baptisms which have been indexed in this volume are those found in the General Register of Births and Baptisms which was created following the Annual Conference of the Westeyan Methodist Church in Canada in June 1843. It was felt necessary to keep such a Register in "the Conference office in Toronto to ensure the preservation of documents and to afford the baptized and others facilities of reference".

The system was simple -- a ruled book was given to each minister by the Registrar each year so that uniform information was gathered throughout the Church. At year's end the old book was turned in new one given. Then a clerk in the Conference office copied the entries into this General Register.

Ministers were requested to turn in any registers prior to 1843 for copying into the General Register. It does not appear the many were received based on the dates in the Register. Most entries are between 1840 and 1873, but this is not a complete record of births and baptisms for the times.

The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada created the original General Registers and they hold the births and baptisms of that denomination up until 1874. With an amalgamaition of Methodist church records for 1874 to 1884 are those of the Methodist Church of Canada; and with further joining of churches from 1884 to 1910, the records are for the Methodist Church of Canada.

Entries in the General Register are arranged according to the circuit, the township, town or city in which the event took place. The entries in this index give the complete entry from the register, but are arranged in alphabetical order BY THE FATHERS NAME so that they appear in family groups. The entries in this book come from the pages in the General Register that cover the northern part of York County, and include baptisms in King, East Gwillimbury, North Gwillimbury, Georgina, Aurora and Newmarket. There are also a number of baptisms that took place in Simcoe County by ministers who were stationed in York and did a circuit through Simcoe.
