By W. H. Irwin
Originally published by Presbyterian Printing House, Toronto, 1873
Historical reprint by Global Heritage Press Inc.

Gazetteers and directories provide real insights into a community and are of significant value to family history researchers. Directories place a person at a specific location at a specific time. Additionally there are other details available about the person, such as occupation and address, as well as details about the community and nieghbors. Additionally, this book provides the reader with a short history of Simcoe County, an overview of institutions, courts, magistrates, Post Offices in 1872-1873.

The book is organized by municipality/township, with each householder and business recorded alphabetically by surname or business name. There is a short descriptive sketch of each municipality before the listing of the persons in the place.

An example of a descriptive sketch of a village in Simcoe County (fuller descriptions are provided for larger places):
"Rosemount. - A village situate on the four corners of the Townships of Adjala, Mono, Mulmur and Tossorontio, in the midst of one of the most fertile sections of the COunty.
