Books, Maps & Other Resources Renfrew County, Ontario Genealogy & History More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources More Renfrew County Resources BOOK - Founding Families of Bagot, Blythfield and Brougham [ Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada ] By Carol Bennett
Were your ancestors living in Bagot, Blythfield or Brougham townships prior to 1861? If so, they were among the earliest pioneer families of the district. Although few of them were rich in worldly goods we should think of these people as part of an elite group who,
through their hard work and vision of a better future, have left a legacy of which we can all be proud. It was they who cleared the land and set up institutions which are valued by us today. The settlement of the area was begun in the mid 1830s when lumbermen and their employees came to the area to harvest teh great forest trees. Many of the pioneers of these three townships had lived elsewhere in the Ottawa Valley before coming to settle in Renfrew County. Loyalists arrived to built saw mills and grist mills. French, irish, Scottish and a few English families joined them. Many had come from the Counties of Lanark, Carleton and Grenville in Ontario, and others from Quebec. Still others had settled in McNab Township under the rule of the autocratic Laird of McNab. This book lists the families who settled in time to be recorded in the census of 1851 and 1861. The material has been rounded out with information from many other sources, such as church records, obituaries, land records, and tombstones. Additional to the census material is information from many other sources including church records, obituaries, newspaper stories, family notes and diaries, land records and tombstones. Whether you are working on your family tree, or merely acknowledging, with understandable pride, that you are descended from one of the founding families of Bagot, Blythfield and Brougham Townships, this book is for you! 156 pages 8.5 X 11" Map Index ISBN 0-919137-28-8
