Were your ancestors living in Grattan, Wilberforce or Eganville prior to 1861? If so, they were among the earliest pioneer families of the district. Although few of them were rich in worldly goods we should think of these people as part of an elite group who,
through their hard work and vision of a better future, have left a legacy of which we can all be proud. It was they who cleared the land and set up institutions which are valued by us today.The settlement of the area was begun in the mid 1820s when lumber jobbers and their employees came into the area to tap the rich resources of the Upper Ottawa Valley. The community of Eganville soon' grew up along the banks of the Bonnechere River, a waterway which served as a boundary between the townships of Grattan and Wilberforce, and other settlements in the area soon followed. This book lists the families who appeared in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Grattan and Wilberforce. Eganville was not enumerated separately at that time. To the census material the uthor has added information from many other sources, such as church records, obituaries, newspaper stories, family notes and diaries, land records and tombstones. While the author doesn't pretend to have assembled complete genealogies of the pioneer generation - that would take the work of several lifetimes - she has at least gathered some data which should be of great value to their descendants, including those not yet born. Ms Bennett also included references to people with similar surnames to those under, study, which will be of value to out-of-town researchers.
