BOOK - Forest to Farm: Early Days of Otonabee (Second Edition)
By D. Gayle Nelson

Twenty-five years after first publishing Forest to Farm, D. Gayle Nelson published a greatly enlarged edition that provides insights into pioneer life in the township.

Apart from the more than 100 new historical photographs, Gayle included a number of excerpts from primary sources: diaries, newspapers and letters. These sources describe a different immigrant experience than those reflected in the writings of Moodie, Strickland or Traill. John McFarlane's Journal details events we can all recognize: " ... the mosquitos are out as thick as hair on a dog and they work with a will and no mistake." Skunks often proved more than a nuisance. When one falls in McFarlane's well and dies, he notes that it was "woeful, woeful." Other times he shows remarkable sensitivity: "We cut down one of our old time big sugar maples about 3 feet thick. It seemed like killing an old friend." In a reflective mood he writes, "The nights are beautiful. It seems a downright shame that we young people have to get up so early in the morning and work so hard all day that we can't afford to knock around a bit at night."

Gayle has included a large section on Otonabee families that genealogists will find particularly helpful. An extensive family index is provided to simplify research.
