BOOK - South Monaghan, The Garden of Eden
By Jean Murray Cole

The townships of Monaghan and Cavan were the first north of Rice Lake to be surveyed when the Mississauga Indians surrendered the back parts of the Newcastle territory to the colonial government.

Samuel Wilmot's survey crews were at work through the summer of 1817, and in 1818, the year Treaty 20 was signed, a large group of independent British settlers took up their land grants in both townships

This narrative history of South Monaghan township tells the story of these early families. Many of their descendants remain in the area today, some on the very land that was cleared and first tilled by their great-grandfathers. Who were these people and what dreams did they bring to the new world? Free grants of land attracted them, but many came with enough capitol to purchase or lease additional acreage and make their start more auspiciously with at least some farm stock and equipment. Soon forest was cleared and cattle and sheep grazed amoung the beautiful hills of South Monaghan. Roads appeared, schools and churches were built and a community grew out of the wilderness.

Early diaries survive to help to recreate a sense of their experience, along with reconrds, documents and many treasured photographs from family collections that appear in these pages. readers will find a vivid picture of the lives and times of their ancestors.

An essential book for everyone with roots in, or an interest in, South Monaghan Township.
