example of a book from this series BOOKS - Halton County Marriage Register 1858-1869, Second Edition
By Elizabeth Hancocks C. G. & W. E. Britnell
In 1857 legislation was enacted to provide for the registration of all marriages performed by clergymen in the Province of Canada West (Ontario). As a result of this legislation we now have a series of records called the County Marriage Registers, which were kept from January 1, 1858 until the formal government registration of all births, marriages and deaths (vital registration) began in Ontario July 1, 1869. These books are published as one volume per county. The exception is the city of 'Toronto' which is a single volume on its own.

BOOK - Halton's Heritage, William Halton and Halton County
By John McDonald
Published by Halton Sketches Publishing, Milton, October 2011
McDonald discusses the early development of Halton County and its transition to a large regional municipality within the Greater Toronto Area. Halton's seventy historic settlements each have a brief history and pictorial representation with an emphasis on the origin of their place names. A Halton Chronology puts into context the life and time of William Halton and his family along with the events that have contributed to the development of the county. Although Halton County was created almost two hundred years ago, very little is known about the person for whom the county was named. After years of research at various archives in Ontario, England, and Bermuda, John McDonald has unearthed hundreds of documents that provide an insight into Halton's life and times.

BOOK - Oakville and The Sixteen- The History of an Ontario Port. by Hazel C. Mathews. Those who think of historical research as mainly involving the turning over of archives in well-catalogued libraries and museums might be startled to learn of the physical exertion that may be required of a conscientious local historian. Not content with poring over moldy account books and dusty letters, Mrs. Mathews's researches have sent her knee-deep through creek water, into bramble tangles in the wildwood of creek beds, through dank stone tunnels running under 100-foot hogsbacks, and flat on her stomach in a one-foot space under the floor of her house. BOOK - The Pioneers of Old Ontario
By W. L. Smith
Originally published by George N. Morang, Toronto, 1923
This edition by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2006 (CD 2010)

In 1897 Smith began a series of trips through rural Ontario with to obtaining first-hand settlement information from its residents. He found a "warehouse" of information was carried in the memories of men and women - memories that went back to the days of the virgin forest, of log cabins surrounded by blackened stumps in the midst of scanty clearings, of bush trails and corduroy roads over which settlers toiled with their grists to distant mills, of old-time logging bees, and of the circuit riders who carried the Gospel message to those real heroes. This book is the result of that effort.

BOOK - History of the Settlement of Upper Canada, With Special Reference to The Bay of Quinte [Ontario]
By William Canniff
Originally published by Dudley & Burns, Ontario, 1869
This edition by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2008, 2011 (CD 2011)

This book grew from modest beginnings into a comprehensive history. The author originally accepted the responsibility to assemble a paper on the topic of the settlement of the Bay of Quinte Region. The "paper grew into a book which went far beyond the history of the settlement of the Bay of Quinte Region. As the work proceeded, Canniff soon realized that in order to prepare a book about the settlement of the Bay of Quinte Region, one had to discuss many topics that concerned the entire province. The final result was this substantial and highly regarded book, which provides an informed insight into the history of the entire province as it was known in 1869 with a focus on the the Bay of Quinte region.

BOOKS - District Marriage Registers of Upper Canada (mostly pre-1858).
By Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton
During the early period of settlement in Upper Canada and Canada West (the province of Ontario), all ministers who performed marriages with the exception of Anglican and Roman Catholic ministers were required to send in returns to the Clerk of the Peace for the District. The majority of returns begin in the 1830s with a few Districts containing earlier marriage returns. The Clerk of the Peace then recorded the returns in a register kept in the office. This series of books are transcriptions of those records. An outstanding resource for locating marriages in early Ontario, during this very difficult research period. Available in hardcover or softcover.

Volume One

Volume Two
BOOKS - Ontario Photographers Lists, Vol 1 & 2
By Glenn Phillips
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton 2003, 2010
Invaluable guides to help you identify the place and date when a photograph was taken. Many family history researchers have boxes of photographs, but do not know who is depicted in the photo nor when or where it was taken. These books list individual photographers, where they worked and when. That means that if you have a photograph that includes a photographer's stamp or other identification you can easily find out when and where that picture was taken. Oftentimes that will help you to identify who is in the picture. Both volumes are organized alphabetically by municipality. However, a comprehensive index is also included. Historical place names have been kept.

BOOK - Across the Waters: Ontario Immigrants' Experiences, 1820-1850
By Frances Hoffman and Ryan Taylor
Published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 1999, 2005 (CD 2009)
Across the Waters is an assembly of the first-hand written accounts of 150 individual immigrants, skillfully bridged by authors Frances Hoffman and Ryan Taylor, to tell the fascinating story of what it was like to leave a familiar homeland to pioneer in the virgin forests of early Ontario. By allowing the personal writings of the early settlers to guide us through their experiences, we come to better appreciate the process of settlement. By examining the various stages of emigration, such as preparing for the journey, ocean crossings, obtaining and clearing land, building a shelter - then a house, and living in the clearings, we gain a clearer understanding of nineteenth century emigrant experience.
