BOOK - Halton Sketches Revisited, Historical Tales of People and Events in North Halton
By John McDonald.
Intrigues by stories of old-time residents of North Halton (Halton County) near Toronto, John McDonald by 1976 had compiled an anecdotal history of his home area
Now, 20 years later, Mr. McDonald has updated and enlarged his original work: a third of the revision is completely new material, with over 130 photographs, drawings and maps in 128 pages.
Weaving together oral histories and other sourcesof information, the author has created a rich tapestry of people and places. Such notables as Lucy Maude Montgomery, Timothy Eaton and railroad developer Sir Donald Mann are featured. So, too, are are lesser known early entrepreneurs.
McDonald also tries to solve some of the puzzles of the area. For instance, who was Dolly Varden? She was the woman who gave her name to the tiny community in which he was raised.
About the author
John McDonald is a founding member of the Esquesing Historical Society and a former member of the Halton Hills and Halton Region Councils, John takes a keen interest in the community and has helped to awaken a new interest in this area's history.
