BOOK - VOLUME 7, Part 2: NEWCASTLE DISTRICT MARRIAGE REGISTER 1848 - 1855
by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai
Published by Global Heritage Press
Once the Newcastle District was proclaimed in 1802 marriage returns for the counties of Northumberland (Peterborough County parts of which later became Colborne County and Mansfield County which later became Victoria County) and Durham had to be returned to the Clerk of the Peace in the District town of Cobourg.
In 1834, certain townships not originally part of the District were attached to counties in the district: Ennismore, Harvey, Douro, Dummer, Belmont, Burleigh and Methuen to Northumberland and Verulan, Fenelon and Eldon to Durham. In 1841 the Colborne District was proclaimed and created out of the townships in the North of Newcastle District (Peterborough and Victoria Counties). Marriages performed in the townships separated into the Colborne District are not included in the Newcastle Register after 1841.
For marriages in the Colborne District refer to the Colborne District Marriage Register. There were originally 3 volumes of marriages, only the index to register A, all of Register B and the beginnings of Register C survives (22 pages were only ever recorded for Register C). The original registers are available on microfilm from the Archives of Ontario and the Church of Latter Day Saints (Genealogical Society of Utah). The Registers cover the years of 1839 - 1854 with returns and affidavits dating well before 1839. Fortunately a good proportion of the actual returns from the clergy survive and therefore Registers A and C have been restored!!
In May of 1849 the Newcastle District was abolished and the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham succeeded the District however marriage returns continued to be sent to the Clerk and exist up to 1855. If you cannot find the marriage you are looking for in the Ottawa District Marriage Register make sure you check the surrounding Districts (Colborne, Victoria, Prince Edward and Home Districts).
Townships included in the Newcastle District, those with an * next to them became part of the Colborne District in 1841: Alnwick, *Asphodel, *Belmont, *Burleigh, Cartwright, Cavan, Clarke, Cramahe, Darlington, *Douro, *Dummer, *Eldon, *Emily, *Ennismore, *Fenelon, Haldimand, Hamilton, *Harvey, Hope, Manvers, *Mariposa, *Methuen, *Monaghan North, *Monaghan South, Murray, *Ops, *Otonabee, Percy, Seymour, *Smith and *Verulam.
