VOLUME 4, Part 2: LONDON DISTRICT MARRIAGE REGISTER 1842 - 1852

The London District was proclaimed in January 1800 and marriage returns for the counties of Norfolk, Oxford, Middlesex and Huron as well as Walpole and Rainham Townships had to be returned to the Clerk of the Peace in the District town of Charlotteville. The District town was initially Charlotteville in the township of the same name but in 1815 the district town was moved to Tisdale’s Mills which was renamed Victoria in 1818 finally in 1826 the district town became London in the county of Middlesex after the court house and jail burnt down in Vittoria.

In 1837 the Talbot District was proclaimed and townships in the County of Norfolk were separated from the London District. For marriages in the Talbot District refer to Volume 1, Talbot District Marriage Register 1837-1857. In 1839 the District of Brock was proclaimed and a separate marriage register for the county of Oxford began

For marriages in the Brock District (Oxford County) refer to, Brock District Marriage Register, 1839-1857. In 1841 the Huron District was proclaimed and townships in Perth and Huron County were separated from the London District. For marriages in the Huron District (Perth, Huron and Bruce Counties) refer to the Huron District Marriage Register 1841-1870. In 1842 the Registry Office for Middlesex County was moved from Dunwich Township in Elgin County to the London. On May 30th 1849 the London District was abolished, but the clerk of the Counties of Elgin and Middlesex continued to register marriages in this volume, until 1852. For marriages after 1852 it is necessary to consult the District Marriage Registers for Elgin and Middlesex 1853 - 1857 which are expected to be transcribed at a later date.

Townships part of the London District included: Adelaide, Aldborough, Bayham, Carrodoc, Delaware, Dorchester North, Dorchester South, Dunwich, Ekfrid, Lobo, London, Malahide, Metcalfe, Mosa, Nissouri West, Southwold, Westminster, Williams (although included as part of the Huron District after 1841) and Yarmouth as well as those townships that became part of the Talbot District after 1837 (Charlotteville, Houghton, Middleton, Rainham, Townsend, Walpole, Walsingham, Windham and Woodhouse); and townships that became part of the Brock District after 1839 (Blandford, Blenheim, Burford, Dereham, Nissouri East, Norwich South, Norwich North, Oakland, Oxford East, Oxford North, Oxford West, Zorra East and Zorra West); and those townships which became part of the Huron District in 1841 (Ashfield, Biddulph, Colborne, Goderich, Hay, Hullet, McGillivrary, McKillop, Stanley, Stephen, Tuckersmith, Usborne, and Wawanosh (all part of Huron County), Blanshard, Downie, Easthope North, Easthope South, Ellice, Fullerton, Gore of Downie, Hibbert and Logan (all part of Perth County).
