Wolfe Island is an island located at the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River in Lake Ontario near Kingston, Ontario. Wolfe Island is part of Frontenac County, Ontario. Together with Howe Island and Simcoe Island, it forms the current township of Frontenac Islands. It is the largest of the Thousand Islands. The largest community on the island is Marysville. This island was named after British General James Wolfe. The island is about 29 km long, with its width varying from around 9 km to a few hundred metres at some points; it has an area of approximately 48 square miles. The resident population is approximately 1400 people (2009), but this number can double or triple during the summer months. This book, Wolfe Island, begins with the emergence of islands at the end of the last ice age and moves through the many centuries of First Nations habitation to the era of French exploration and the fur trading, the arrival of the earliest British settlers and the United Empire Loyalists, up to current time (2009). The development and decline of industry, the evolution of facilities, land title frustrations, and the emergence of a strong sense of identity among the inhabitants are featured, along with a wealth of anecdotes based on colourful and eccentric personalities. This extensively researched history of Wolfe Island is a treasure trove for history buffs. Wolfe Island documents the growth of community, the emergence of colourful characters and the legacy of multi-generation families traced back to the island's first settlers 304 pages 9" X 9" Index Bibliography Photos and illustrations Maps Softcover Publisher: Dundurn (Aug 13 2009) Language: English ISBN-10: 1554883989 ISBN-13: 978-1554883981
