BOOK - Bruce County Gazetteer and Directory of 1880-81
By William W. Evans (originally published 1879)
This historical reprint by Global Heritage Press
This book is a faithful facsimile reproduction of the original Bruce County Gazetteer and Directory of 1880-81 that was printed in 1879. We've added a fold-out map of the counties of Bruce, Perth, Huron and Waterloo Counties in 1852, that provides a handy reference to the boundaries of the townships in each county as well as the larger towns.
The author provides a detailed description of political boundaries, topographical features, land cleared and value of crops. The book begins with a historical sketch of the county including details of its townships, towns, and villages. Most Townships and villages also have more detailed historical sketches in their respective sections.
The directory is easy to use, with its content organized by township. Each township section provides a list of heads of household on each farm within the township, the address of the farmer (by lot and concession, with number of acres held). Business people in township are also listed, with references to the municipality where they reside. Of special interest are the numerous circa 1880 business advertisements that are included thoughout.
