On Tuesday 2 November 2004 the Honourable Bill Rompkey (Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate) presented Bill S-18, An Act to Amend the Statistics Act, to the Senate of Canada. It was read for the first time and placed on the Orders of the Day for Second Reading "two days hence."

At the same time the Honourable Lorna Milne, Senator, sent an Announcement to the Canada Census Campaign Mail List, along with the wording of the Bill and a draft News Release. Statistics Canada subsequently put out a News Release, a Backgrounder and Question and Answer sheet.
