BOOK - A Pioneer History of the County Lanark

This book is a superb local history of an Upper Canada county that became home to a rapidly growing population throughout the early years of the nineteenth century. Ms. McGill provides a detailed historical account of the settlement and development of the county, plus biographical content, ships/settlement lists and other helpful information. In print for more than thirty years, this book is still the best work on the topic.

BOOK - Perth-On-The-Tay, A Tale Of The Transplanted Highlanders
By: Josephine Smith.
Josephine Smith self-published her popular narrative about the every-day lives of Lanark County pioneers in 1901. She tells the story of the Perth military settlement from its beginning, then explores its early development by mixing history with fictionalized accounts of actual events and people. Having written the book in the closing years of the 19th century, the author had personal access to first-hand accounts from some of the original settlers and many their children.

BOOK - The Bathurst Courier, Extracts From The Bathurst (Perth) Courier 1834-1857. By Dan Walker. Few records of daily life are as diverse as local newspapers. The Bathurst Courier is a goldmine of information stretching back to the early days of settlement when Ontario was known as Upper Canada. The Bathurst Courier was published in Lanark County's county town of Perth from 1834 to 1857. It later became known as the Perth Courier.

BOOKS - Lanark County Marriage Register 1858-1869, Second Edition. By Elizabeth Hancocks C. G. & W. E. Britnell. In 1857 legislation was enacted to provide for the registration of all marriages performed by clergymen in the Province of Canada West (Ontario). As a result of this legislation we now have a series of records called the County Marriage Registers, which were kept from January 1, 1858 until the formal government registration of all births, marriages and deaths (vital registration) began in Ontario July 1, 1869. These books are published as one volume per county. The exception is the city of 'Toronto' which is a single volume on its own. More information

BOOKS - District Marriage Registers of Upper Canada (mostly pre-1858). By Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai. During the early period of settlement in Upper Canada and Canada West (the province of Ontario), all ministers who performed marriages with the exception of Anglican and Roman Catholic ministers were required to send in returns to the Clerk of the Peace for the District. The majority of returns begin in the 1830s with a few Districts containing earlier marriage returns. The Clerk of the Peace then recorded the returns in a register kept in the office. This series of books are transcriptions of those records. An outstanding resource for locating marriages in early Ontario, during this very difficult research period. In 1857 legislation was enacted to provide for the registration of all marriages performed by clergymen in the Province of Canada West (Ontario). As a result of this legislation we now have a series of records called the County Marriage Registers, which were kept from January 1, 1858 until the formal government registration of all births, marriages and deaths (vital registration) began in Ontario July 1, 1869. These books are published as one volume per county. The exception is the city of 'Toronto' which is a single volume on its own.
