John JOHNSTON and Janet McLAREN were married in St. Ninian's Parrish,
Stirlingshire, Scotland on Feb. 2nd 1834. John was born about 1811 in
Scotland. Janet was christened Jan. 26th 1816 with a twin sister Agnes.
Janet and Agnes's parents were Peter McLAREN and Janet RENNIE.

The couple had three children in Scotland before
coming to Canada. The birth dates are approximate from Census Records.
Alexander was born @ 1834. John was born about 1836. Janet was born
about 1840.

John JOHNSTON and Janet McLAREN came to Drummond Township, Lanark Co.,
Ontario about 1848 with the above children. The 1851 Census shows them
on Range 2 Lot 21. They had the following children in Drummond:
Isabelle born @ 1851, Agnes born @ 1854, Daniel born about 1855,
Christina Ann born @ 1858, and Mary Jane born @ 1867.

By 1861, the family had moved to Westmeath Township, Renfrew Co.,
Ontario.

I am connected to the son,
John who married Lucy GIBSON. They moved to North Dakota in 1880 with
John's brother Daniel. (Note The GIBSON's were not "Society Settlers",
but received land in Richmond, Lanark Co., on a military Grant in 1824).

Daniel, after homesteading in North Dakota with his
brother, John, moved to Rusk Co. Wisconsin. My only information on that
line is from the 1920 Census. I would love to find decendants.

The son Alexander and the daughters, as far as I can tell married and
stayed in Cobden. I found a decendant of Alexander who supplied
the photo and gave me permission to send it to you.

Other connecting families are BROWN, CONDIE, HAWTHORNE.

Of human interest is that my great aunt remembers that her father said
his father John JOHNSTON (son of John and Janet) was worried about
coming to Ontario because he wasn't sure they would have oatmeal there.
If I had to travel on a boat to a land I was unfamiliar with, I'd be
worried about drowning not oatmeal!
