LANARK COUNTY NAMES
ON A WW2 BAR RIVER, ALGOMA DISTRICT MEMORIAL PLAQUE

Transcribed for the LCGS website by Michelle Skarazinskas.

I only have the clipping, which doesn't give the date of the ceremony, nor the name of the newspaper, although I would think that it would probably be The Sault Star or the Bruce Mines Spectator. Many of the families in the Bar River area came from Lanark County. I don't know all of them, but I do have information on some of them. The names relevant to Lanark are capitalized, and additional information given after the clipping transcription.

Bar River is 25 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Highway 17 East, between Bruce Mines and Sault Ste. Marie. The village of Bar River has a very small population, but covers a large area. Lots of farms.

The memorial plaque was vandalized some years ago, and was moved from Bar River to Echo Bay, where it is located in front of the old train station. The plaque sustained only minor damage.

CHURCH MEMORIAL PLAQUE HONORS 61 WAR VETERANS
BAR RIVER - A memorial plaque containing the names of 61 members of the armed forces of the Second World War, was unveiled in an impressive ceremony in Bar River United Church Friday evening.  The list constitutes the 59 men and 2 women who represented Laird Township in all three branches of the services, Army, Navy and Air Force.
Four ministers, Rev. R. E. Morden of St. Andrew's United Church, Sault, E. Hutchinson of Bar River United Church, Rev. A. Privett of Garden River Anglican Church, and Rev. G. E. Rousom of Bar River United Church, took part in the service.
Attention was called to the fact that one, Sgt. Air Gunner B. T. Taylor of the R.C.A.F. had paid the supreme sacrifice.
The plaque was unveiled by Mrs. W. K. Headrick and Mrs. A. Stewart. The names on the roll were read by J. D. Gormley.
The church was decorated for the ceremony with autumn leaves and flowers adorning the platform.  The Union Jack was draped over the honor roll prior to the unveiling.
The fact that harvesting operations were in full swing was largely responsible for the disappointing attendance.
