Gerald McInrue, gmcinrue@ripnet.com

I have been searching for information on the Internet without much success to date on the surname McINRUE. I know that the family history in Canada begins in Lanark County. A cousin Ken McInrue has researched most of the data that follows and he did his research in the area around Smiths Falls and Perth. I hope someone can provide me with some suggestions as to how to fill in the missing pieces.

James McINRUE was born in Ireland in 1801, died Lanark County in 1877. He married Bridget MASTERS (born Ireland 1811), marriage date unknown. 1841 Canada census shows James to be farmer, head of household for family residing on lot 26, 4th concession, Montague Township, Lanark County, Upper Canada. James and Bridget were in Canada prior to 1831 as it is known that all of his nine (9) children were born in Upper Canada, the first, James Jr. in 1831. Land records deed for the property occupied by James was shown to be McENROE in 1848. Bridget was listed in the 1881 census but not in 1891 census, date of death is unknown or where burial took place.
James and Bridget were illiterate so we must assume that the name was originally McENROE but were unable to instruct any official as to how to spell the name for any official documents.
It would be nice to know where James and Bridget were born and when they married, but it may never be known nor may it be that important. We know that they were in Canada in 1831 but we don’t know when or how they came to be in the region of Lanark county. The land on which James farmed was not deeded to him until 1848? Where was James and his family between 1831 and 1841? Was he recruited by Peter Robinson to settle the land to provide protection from invasion from the south? How does one search for those missing links when there are so few records and it is unknown just where they ended up after they left the farm?
Family of James McINRUE & Bridget MASTERS:
1. James jr., born UC 1831
He married Mary REGAN (born in IRL) on Nov. 18, 1856 at St. Francis de Sales RC Church, Smiths Falls. He was a carpenter and later a hotel keeper. He died November of 1871. Mary remarried Thomas DOWNES.
James and Mary had six children:
1. John, born UC 1859
Migrated to Illinois. Died in Chicago Heights in 1936. I have been able to contact two of his married daughters in Virginia and Florida.
2. Michael, born UC 1861
Also migrated to Illinois where he married and had a family. He died in 1909. I have been unable to make contact with any of his offspring to date. I do know that they are out there.
3. William, born UC 1863, died in 1881.
4. Ellen, born UC 1865
Married James BRENNAGH in Smiths Falls and lived there all her life. To date I do not know any more.
5. Margaret, CW 1867, no further info.
6. Anne, born CW 1870, no further info.
2. Mary, born UC 1836
Never married, died in Montague April 3, 1905.
3. Patrick, born UC 1837
No known data at present, however I did locate a Patrick McINRUE in the 1860 US census in NY, NY. Have been unable to find out anything beyond this to date. Also located a Frank and Beatrice McINRUE in the Bronx NY, having deceased in 1980’s and 70’s and that is where the search has ended at present.
4. Michael, born UC 1840
Never married and inherited the farm. Died in Brockville, year unknown.
5. Elizabeth, born UC 1841
Married Charles Edward JOHNSTON, year unknown. They had one son that is known, being George JOHNSTON. Death of Elizabeth and Charles is not known nor where or if there were other children.
Their son, George JOHNSTON 22, married Margaret LANE, 19 May 1891, at home of her uncle John WILTON. Notice states that Charles JOHNSTON born US, George JOHNSTON born US, Elizabeth McINROE born UC. For reasons unknown George changed his name to McINRUE some time in 1891, as he shows up in the 1891 census as George MACKENRUE. He was living at that time on the farm of his uncle Michael McINRUE. Was reported to be a farm hand, labourer, born US.
George and Margaret are my grandparents. The history of their family is well documented as only two of their seven children had any family.
6. Thomas, born UC 1844, no information.
7. John, born UC 1847, died 1861.
8. Margaret, born UC 1847
Married Patrick CARROLL, no other data known at this time.
9. Eugene, born UC 1851, no information.
I have had correspondence with a Patrick McINRUE in Scotland who tells us that the family history is that they came from Ireland in the 1880’s. However I have data from the IGI of McINRUEs in Scotland in the early 1800’s.

I know now that there are McINRUEs in Scotland, Canada and the USA. Those in North America can probably trace their history back to James Sr.

Added December, 1998:

There was a recent funeral for a Mrs. O'BRIEN [in Smiths Falls], I believe she was the wife of Oscar O'BRIEN who predeceased her.

This Mrs. O'BRIEN also had a sister-in-law -- a Miss Marguerite O'BRIEN, a resident of Brockville. This O'BRIEN family are on record as stating that their grandfather was a McINRUE.

This is possibly James McINRUE Jr., b 1831, Montague Tp, Lanark Co. James married Mary REGAN, b. Ireland in 1854. James d. in 1871. Mary remarried a Thomas DOWNES.

James and Mary had six children, three of which were daughters. Ellen, b. 1865, m. James BRENNAGH; Margaret, b. 1867; and Anne, b. 1870. Ellen is reported to have lived all her life in Smiths Falls. Any one of the three women could have been the grandmother of the O'BRIEN family.

Was there a death notice in the local newspaper that listed relations that were in attendance at the funeral, and that identified the community in which they lived, so that they can be contacted and it could be learned what family history they know?
