           My interests in eastern Ontario are the George CODE family of Beckwith Township in Lanark County and the DRISCOLL/BOYD families near Merrickville in Grenville County.

           George CODE (CODD, COAD), born 1796/97 in Co. Wicklow, IRL, perhaps son of John CODD Sr., apparently emigrated to Beckwith in 1822 (or 1820), settling on SW 1/2 lot 3 Con. 12 at Scotch Corners near Mississippi Lake. That farm is still owned by the CODE family. On October 12, 1826 George married Jane MORRIS, born ca. 1807/08 in IRL, daughter of Joseph MORRIS of Perth, Lanark Co. George CODE died in Beckwith Twp. Apr. 2, 1890, aged 93; Jane died in Beckwith circa Aug. 3, 1894, aged 86; both were buried in St. John's Churchyard, lot 1 Con.12, Lanark Twp.

13 known children:

1. Joseph COAD (b. ca. 1827; d. Dec. 5, 1900 in Wingham, Huron Co., Ont;) married July 6, 1857 to Ann CODE and later to Annie LUDLOW. Children: George, Thomas Mary, Harris, Fred, Alice. Joseph farmed in Beckwith, then in East Wawanosh in Huron Co., and later lived in Wingham;
2. Ann CODE (b. Jan. 9, 1828; d. May 30, 1911) married Sept. 21, 1847 to Edward CHAMNEY. They farmed on lot 3 Con. 11, Beckwith. Children: Edward, George, John, Rebecca;
3. Sarah CODE (b. July 6, 1832; d. before 1904) married Feb. 21, 1861 to John CODE. They lived in Smiths Falls. No other information;
4. John CODE (b. Feb. 11, 1835; d. Mar. 16, 1910) married Nancy STANLEY. They farmed on lot 2 Con. 2 Ramsey Twp., but by 1900 were living in Carleton Place. Children: Ethel M., George S., Mary J.;
5. George CODE Jr. (b. ca. Nov. 23, 1836) married June 27, 1861 to Rachel CODE (a second cousin and sister of Ann CODE who married Joseph COAD). George was also married a second time. He apparently farmed in East Whitefield Twp., Wright Co., PQ; another source indicates he lived near Buckingham, PQ. Possible children: Thomas, Mary, Herbert, Rachel, Emma;
6. Rachel CODE (b. Aug. 14, 1838; d. June 1, 1904 in Morris Twp., Huron Co.) married Mar. 19, 1868 to William MARSHALL (s/o James & Catherine MARSHALL, Ramsey Twp.). They farmed N 1/2 lot 10 Con. 9, Morris Twp., Huron Co. William's two brothers (Robert & James) also came to Huron Co., settling in East Wawanosh Twp. Children: Catherine, Mary Jane, Euphemia, Ann, Sarah Elizabeth, Wm. James;
7. Abraham CODE (b. Mar. 14, 1841) married Aug. 11 1868 to Melissa RUTHERFORD (of South Gower, d/o Robert & Amanda RUTHERFORD). Abraham was apparently in Michigan in 1851 and was later a merchant in the Northwest Territories;
8. Richard "Dick" CODE (b. Dec. 27, 1842; d. Aug. 23, 1924) married Emlyn GLOVER. Richard was a teacher in Lanark, Huron, & Lambton counties. By 1872 he was teaching in Alvinston, Lambton Co. He was later clerk of Alvinston and also in the real estate business. Children: Silas, Stanley, Thomas, Franklin, Wiolmot, Angelina, Edward;
9. Mary CODE (b. Dec. 27, 1842 -- twin of Richard; d. Feb. 8, 1882) married Apr. 13, 1875 to Hugh MOORE, a tailor in Carleton Place. Children: Melissa from previous marriage; Hugh had children Elizabeth, Emma, Rebecca, William;
10. Thomas CODE (b. Dec. 1844; d. Dec. 12, 1927 in Morris Twp., Huron Co.) married Oct. 29, 1872 Ann "Annie" RATHWELL (b. Sept. 11, 1841 near Innisville, Drummond Twp., d/o William Thomas RATHWELL & Sarah MORRIS). As a young man, Thomas spent some time with older brother Joseph in East Wawanosh Twp. Thomas returned to Beckwith, married Annie, and farmed at Scotch Corners for 12 years. In 1884 he bought a farm in Morris Twp., Huron Co. next to his brother-in-law (William MARSHALL). Thomas was a Morris Twp. councillor and reeve. He later retired to Blyth where he was a conveyancer, notary public, real estate agent, and Clerk of Division Court. Children: Sarah Jane "Sadie", Anna Maud, Laura Elsie, Melissa May (Elsie was my grandmother; Sadie was the grandmother of author Alice MUNRO);
11. William Nicholas CODE (b. Dec. 24, 1846; d. 1923) married Mary STANLEY and farmed on the homestead in Beckwith. Children: George, Eva, Ida, Mary, Matthew, William;
12. Jane CODE (b. Sept. 4, 1848; d. Oct. 28, 1848);
13. Jane CODE (b. Mar. 31, 1850) apparently also died as an infant.
