Charlie Lemmex, 3082 Northview Crescent, Burlington ON L7M 1B1
We are researching LEMMEX, LEMAX, LUMAX, LUMIX and the Gaelic
spelling LUMMOCKS from Counties Wexford & Kerry that settled in
Beckwith Township, Lanark County in 1819. A branch of the family also
emigrated from County Cavan in the later 1700's and settled in the
Windsor, Vermont area.
My ancestors immigrated as part of the Wexford Irish arriving on the
"Maria", 29th June 1819 and were settled by the Perth
Military Settlement 20th Aug. 1819 on NE13 and SW13 Concession 13 Beckwith
Township. The records indicate John LEMMEX Sr. (wife and 4
children) and his son John LEMMEX Jr. settled on the land but did
not receive formal patents until 30 years later. Glenn Lockwood, in his
book "Beckwith: Irish and Scottish Identities in a Canadian
Community", refers to the family as LUMMOX. As you can
imagine our name suffers from many spelling derivations ranging from Lemax
to Lumox etc. Joseph Elly, when compiling a list of immigrants at Ross,
County Wexford, Ireland has the family listed as LUMMOCKS in 1817.
John LEMMEX Sr.'s family was as follows: his wife and children,
Thomas, Henry, Catherine, Elizabeth, William and John Jr. Thomas received
a grant on the 14th March 1833 SW half lot 6, concession 8, Beckwith Twp.
John Jr. sold his property to brother Thomas and purchased lot 28
concession 3, Montague Twp. on 24th Jan 1834.
William moved to Ramsay Twp. 14th April 1825 and settled on the East half
lot 2, concession 8. He then moved to Kitley Twp. (5th concession - Kinch
St.) March 5th 1843. That branch of the family continue to spell the name LEMAX.
Catherine married Henry HAWKINS and raised a family in the
Franktown area. Some of that family are buried in the Franktown Public
Cemetery. I should note that Henry HAWKINS and other members of
that Irish family also came out on the "Maria" at the
same time and settled on the 12th concession. As the early LEMMEX
family were members of the Church of England, I have been able to trace
some of the baptismal records from the Anglican Diocese in Ottawa.
My main interest is finding more information on the original family. I
cannot find any burial records for John Sr. or his wife (name unknown).
Although the family is listed as part of the Wexford Irish, I do not know
if they were born in that country. A brief sketch from the Lemax family
suggests that William was born in the County of Kerry. If anyone can shed
light on my family and assist me in my research, I would be most grateful.
