I am revisiting research begun in 1979 and attempting to fill in some missing gaps and hoping to solve some family mysteries.

John GEMMILL (1795-1874) married Margaret ROBERTSON (1807-1861) and farmed at E1/2 Lot 16, Conc. 1, Ramsay Twp., Lanark Co. (Union Hall). Their children:

Jane GEMMILL, 1831-1884, m. James KELLOUGH, lvd. Lanark Twp.
James GEMMILL, 1833-1833
James Hutchison GEMMILL, 1834-?, m. Harriet CHAMBERLAIN or DEAN, last known living Clayton, Ramsay Twp.
Agnes GEMMILL, 1836-1902, m. Michael MCINNES, lvd. Sault Ste. Marie
William GEMMILL, 1837-1913, m. Margaret MILLER, lvd. Cobden, Renfrew Co.
John GEMMILL, 1839-1922, m. Ann J. COULTER, lvd. Almonte
Archibald GEMMILL, 1841-1934, m. Christina MCLEESE, lvd. Cobden
Mary GEMMILL, 1843-1886, m. John McDERMID, lvd. Cobden
Christina GEMMILL, 1845-1870
George Robertson GEMMILL, 1847-1933, m. Ellen WOODS, lvd. Cobden.

John was born in Scotland and may have lived with a brother in Ireland before emigrating to Canada. He located his lot in Ramsay Twp. in April/May 1821 at the same time as a number of other settlers from Ireland, but before the Lanark Society Settlers who arrived later that year. I am interested to learn if these settlers from Ireland were an organized group that travelled together or did each of them emigrate independently?

James Hutchison GEMMILL (1834-?) and Harriet CHAMBERLAIN or DEAN (c1839-?) of Clayton had four children:

Margaret Jane GEMMILL, 1858-1925, m. Robert W. MOIR, lvd. Arnprior, McNab Twp.

John R. GEMMILL, 1860-1932, lvd. Sault Ste. Marie

James Dean GEMMILL, 1863-1939, m. Alice L. GORDON, lvd. Whitefish, Sudbury District

Agnes H. GEMMILL, c1864-?, m. Richard STEWART, lvd. where?

James took over the family homestead from his father John in 1862 which was sold at auction in Carleton Place on 5 Aug 1863 by Mary Wylie and James H. Wylie who held the first mortgage. Last known record for James H. found in a Poll Book dated June 1863 where “James H. Gemmill, Innkeeper, Clayton” is recorded. I have not found any further evidence of James and Harriet after that time. Several older family members say they “went to the USA” (where Harriet was born according to the 1861 census). Their children were living with relatives in Ontario in 1871 and 1881.

Agnes GEMMILL their youngest daughter married Richard STEWART on 20 Dec 1886 in Almonte and recorded her birthplace as USA. He was the son of George and Ann J. STEWART and was born c1863 in Darling Twp., Lanark Co. Again, I have not found any further evidence of Agnes and Richard after their marriage.

I am interested in exchanging information with any other descendants and any suggestions for further resources that may help to solve some of the family mysteries would be most welcome.
