Joseph LEGARE
was born c. 1790 near Quebec City. He was recruited to join a select
regiment in 1809 and was QM Sgt. with the Canadian Fencibles during War
1812-14. He served at the Battle of Chateauguay and was awarded that
medal. In 1816 he was discharged along with the De Meuron and the De
Watteville Regiments at Kingston. He had served over seven years in the
military. Thus he was among the veterans and the first pioneers of the
Rideau Settlement where he petitioned and received a military land grant
along the Mississippi River. He built a log cabin and a stone house later
about a mile north of Balderson. He obtained a license for an inn and ran
a ferry across the river. In his register Rev. Bell recorded two marriages
1839 & 1841 at Legare's Ferry. A century later the surname on this
line faded from the region.
Elizabeth HUGHES,
daughter of Patrick and Anne LEGARY, was my paternal grandmother.
She married David AMELL who was a river driver on the Mississippi.
I would like to hear from researchers of the above families and compare
notes on this ancestral heritage.
