| Part of
Smith's 1846 Canadian Gazetteer Updated
October 14, 1999 |
|
Contains the geographical names (townships, towns, villages,
etc.) from that part of the Gazetteer relating to eastern
Ontario, with a description of each, the amount of
Crown land available, the population, the amount and value
of cultivated land, etc. The Gazetter has been split into
districts -- the Bathurst, Dalhousie, Eastern, Johnstown,
Midland and Ottawa districts -- but a menu
of names in the introductory page allows selection of
any geographical name. There is also a list of post offices,
with names of postmasters, names of magistrates and of
many government officials, in each district. There is
an extensive early history of Canada, and a description
of the country as it was in 1846. This includes a section
on the destruction of the animals and forests and what
could be done about it. Another section devotes itself
to extensive hints to potential immigrants, comparing
Canada favourably to the USA and other destinations (cheaper
farmland, more law abiding, no cannibals, etc.). |
