Dear Gordon,

I did not send my personal observations regarding the "Town Hall" meetings in Halifax simply because I was not an objective but a very biased observer. For the foregoing reason, I do not believe my impressions can be very relevant.

I took no notes, the sound system was so bad before they turned off the air conditioning, it was difficult to hear clearly. The first speaker, a stats man from the government of N.S. (I can't remember his name) I believe stated he was invited to speak, and was against release. The second gentleman, also a stats man from the government of N.S. was against. This is when I became hot under the collar and thought their reasonings were rather asinine; but remember, I am biased on the subject.

One of the government men approached three of us after the afternoon session adjourned, and we had a rather lengthy discussion on the subject and perhaps maybe, his eyes were opened a little. The other gentleman just skulked away.

Every other speaker was in favor and the majority of the presentations were excellent.

The moderator, played devil's advocate and questioned each speaker after his/her presentation. I strongly feel Stats Canada's position is this: If the census information becomes public domain, even after 92 years, they will have difficulty getting people to reply to future census questions. He cited a brouhaha that happened in Ottawa a few years ago when some other data was released to the public. I asked him if the information was 92 years old and he stated "no it was information collected only recently". I replied "therein lies your answer".

I feel rather apprehensive about having you post the above opinions to the general list but give my permission if you able to do so without editing same.

Regards, Sandy
