TOWN HALL MEETINGS

This page contains correspondence from Lyn Duncan relating to the Town Hall meeting held at Vancouver.

Subject: Vancouver Town Hall meetings (my observations)

I arrived at the Town Hall Meeting room with a preconcieved notion of what I thought, by what I had seen on TV, the meeting format would be.

We were informed that there are many formats for a meeting of this sort, the one chosen would consist of only the Moderator asking questions of the Presenters. No questions or comments would be allowed from the audience.

The Moderator faced the audience with a table and microphone, the Presenter's chair faced the Moderator with a table and microphone and a few feet between the two.

I was not prepared to make a presentation, but since there was time in the afternoon, after the scheduled Presenters, I decided to make a brief presentation regarding the genetic link regarding Mental Illness. I also said that I could trace my g.g.grandmother with some of her children and my grandmother with her mother and father from Russia through Ellis Island, but not when they came to Canada from the U.S.A.!! Also what a thrill it was to see my grandmother's name on the ship's manifest.

I found the situation quite comfortable facing only the Moderator with constant eye contact.

All persons that spoke at both meetings appeared quite at ease, and were encouraged to explore at length their particular reasons for release of the Post 1901 Canadian Census. The Moderator appeared to be a pleasant, sensitive man. His questions appeared to be only to clarify issues posed by the Presenters. When approaching areas of health concerns he said we did not have to answer if we didn't want to, or felt uncomfortable doing so.

The turn-out was less than we had hoped for, but the quality of informed speakers I thought was very impressive.

All in all, I feel we were well respected in our views.

At the break between meetings, one of Environic's staff was asked if anyone from Stats Can was in attendance. His reply - after looking around the room - was "not anymore".
