Hello Gordon:

I attended the meeting on Friday with a driver who drove from Deep River to Ottawa (a 2 hour drive). We paid $15 to park for 3 hours. I hope future meetings are held in an area more easily accessed. I felt totally frustrated after listening to the Environics Representative. It is obvious that the agenda is to have us admit that a "promise" was made. Stats Canada will continue to have meetings until they get the desired result. They will rely heavily on "focus groups" made of people with no prior knowledge of the problem, tell them only what they want the group to hear, and, naturally, the group will come to the conclusion that a "promise" was made.

Every presenter made excellent arguments. I suspect that similar arguments were presented to the "blue ribbon panel". Environics chooses to ignore any previous findings. The focus is totally on "the promise". It is repeated so often, that anyone not aware of all that has been said would believe the statement to be true.

I hope that the word will get out to presenters at future "town hall meetings" to be prepared to answer the question - "why do you think Stats Canada believes that a promise was made?" I suspect that many of the records have been destroyed and they don't want Canadians to find this out. We know that the agricultural schedules for 1911 are gone. Has anyone seen the rest?

Also, I don't believe all people who work for Stats Canada should be grouped together into one unit. At least one employee has been very helpful in supplying information when requested. There is one person, at the top, who has dug in his/her heels and the rest must follow directions/policy.

J. J. Patterson, Pembroke
